I mean, you’re literally in the thick of Johannesburg’s business district, but tucked away enough that you don’t feel like you’re sleeping on a highway. The studio setup is pretty clever actually – it’s one of those three-star spots that punches above its weight because someone clearly thought about how people actually use hotel rooms.

What struck me first was how quiet it gets at night, which is sort of surprising given that you’re on Oxford Road. The soundproofing is better than you’d expect, though you’ll still hear the occasional taxi hooting in the early morning (but honestly, that’s just Johannesburg waking up). The studio itself feels more like a proper apartment than a hotel room – there’s actual counter space in the kitchenette, and the bed doesn’t dominate the entire space like in most compact places. You know what I really appreciated? The shower has proper water pressure, and the hot water doesn’t run out after five minutes. Small things, but they matter when you’re staying more than a night or two.

The neighborhood itself is interesting – you’re walking distance to Sandton City if you need proper shopping, and there are decent coffee shops within a block or two. During the day, Oxford Road gets busy with office workers, but it’s not the chaotic kind of busy. More like purposeful busy, if that makes sense. Parking was straightforward when I was there, though I’d imagine it gets tighter during peak business season. The front desk staff actually knows the area well – they pointed me toward a local place for dinner that I never would have found otherwise, tucked away in one of those mini shopping centers that Sandton does so well. It’s not luxury by any stretch, but there’s something refreshingly unpretentious about the whole setup. You get what you need without paying for amenities you probably won’t use anyway.
