I’ll be honest – when I first heard the name 171 The Base Apartment, I wasn’t sure what to expect. It’s tucked away on Surrey Avenue in Randburg, and you know what? That turned out to be exactly what I needed. This three-star spot sits in one of those neighborhoods where you actually feel like you’re living in Johannesburg rather than just passing through it.

The apartment setup really works if you’re staying more than a night or two. I mean, having a proper kitchen changes everything – you can grab groceries from the Pick n Pay down the road instead of eating every meal out (which honestly gets expensive fast in this city). The space feels more like borrowing a friend’s place than staying in a typical hotel room. There’s this lived-in comfort that you don’t get in the shinier places closer to Sandton City. The furnishing is practical rather than flashy, but everything actually works – and trust me, I’ve stayed in fancier places where half the appliances were just for show.

What surprised me most was how quiet it gets at night. Randburg can be a bit hectic during the day with all the traffic heading toward the business districts, but once evening hits, Surrey Avenue settles down nicely. I could actually open the windows without worrying about street noise keeping me up. The parking situation is straightforward too – no hunting around for spots or paying extra fees, which anyone who’s driven in Jo’burg will appreciate. You’re also positioned really well for getting around the northern suburbs without dealing with the worst of the highway madness. It’s maybe a 15-minute drive to Rosebank or Sandton when traffic cooperates, and honestly, the Gautrain station isn’t far if you want to skip the driving altogether. I found myself walking to the local coffee shops more than I expected – there’s this little strip of places that clearly cater to people who live in the area rather than tourists, which gave me a better feel for the city than staying in the usual hotel zones would have.

  Location was very good 👍
  
  What could be improved: There was only 1 set of towels for our 3 days' stay. No clean towels.
  Luckily, I always pack my own towels. Was promised that I would get a second set but didn't receive it.
  Too hot. No fan or aircon. Was battling to sleep. The bathroom has beautiful accessories but no guest soaps to wash your hands.
  The last guest used the braai stand & was not even cleaned.

  The apartment is beautiful and peaceful. Very clean and you even forget that you in the city at night. The host is available on your finger tips on text. The security and the care taker were very helpful and ready to assist with a smile.
