The rooms have this perfect balance of modern amenities without feeling sterile, and honestly, the attention to detail is what got me. Things like really good coffee (not the usual instant stuff), proper blackout curtains that actually work, and – this might sound small but it matters – decent water pressure in the shower. The staff genuinely seems to care about making your stay work, not just going through the motions. I had this issue with my rental car parking, and instead of just shrugging it off, they actually called around to sort out a solution.

What I love about staying in Observatory is that you get this authentic slice of Joburg life without the chaos. You can walk to some genuinely great local spots – there’s this fantastic Ethiopian place just down the road that most tourists never find, and the whole area has this artsy, slightly bohemian vibe that feels real rather than manufactured for visitors. The guesthouse itself seems to attract interesting people too; I ended up having these great conversations over breakfast with other guests who weren’t just doing the typical safari-and-city circuit. Morning check-in was smooth (I arrived early and they actually had my room ready), and they’re pretty flexible about late departures if you ask nicely. The only minor thing I’d mention is that if you’re not comfortable with stairs, definitely ask about room placement – it’s an older building with character, which means some rooms require a bit of climbing. But honestly, for the quality and the genuine hospitality you get, plus that 9.6 rating that’s clearly earned rather than bought, this place delivers something most hotels just can’t – it actually feels like Johannesburg rather than generic international accommodation that could be anywhere.

  I had such a wonderful stay at 1945 on Kloof Guesthouse. The owners’ attention to detail and care for their guests was truly amazing. Breakfast was absolutely delicious, and on one evening the owner even prepared dinner for us on just an hour’s notice – it was fantastic! The rooms were very comfortable with nice beds, and everything was spotlessly clean. A really warm and welcoming place to stay – highly recommended.
