I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to 235 On Surrey, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like a pretty standard apartment-style building on Surrey Avenue. But you know what? Sometimes the unassuming places in Randburg end up being exactly what you need, and this three-star spot actually surprised me in a few good ways.

The thing about staying here is that you’re right in the thick of things without dealing with the chaos of central Johannesburg. Surrey Avenue isn’t the prettiest street in the world, I mean, it’s got that typical Randburg mix of office buildings and residential blocks, but it’s incredibly practical. There’s a Woolworths just down the road – and honestly, that became my lifesaver for grabbing decent coffee and snacks. The rooms themselves have this self-catering setup that actually works well if you’re staying more than a night or two. I appreciated having a proper kitchenette because, let’s face it, eating out every meal in Joburg adds up fast. The apartments are clean and functional, though don’t expect anything fancy – we’re talking IKEA-style furniture and basic finishes, but everything worked and the Wi-Fi was solid (which, given some places I’ve stayed around here, isn’t always a given).

What really won me over was how quiet it gets at night, which is pretty remarkable considering you’re still close enough to the Sandton area that you can be in the business district in about fifteen minutes. The staff at reception were genuinely helpful too – not in that over-the-top way that feels fake, but actually useful. When I needed directions to the Gautrain station, the guy didn’t just point me toward a map, he walked outside and showed me exactly which streets to take to avoid the morning traffic madness. Parking was straightforward, which anyone who’s tried to navigate Johannesburg by car will appreciate. The building itself has decent security – you need a key card for everything, and there’s always someone at the front desk. I stayed during a pretty busy period in March, and while I could hear some of the other guests in the hallway, it wasn’t the kind of noise that kept me up. Look, it’s not going to blow your mind with luxury touches or Instagram-worthy design, but if you want a clean, safe base that won’t destroy your budget while you explore the northern suburbs or do business in Sandton, this place does the job well. Plus, being on Surrey Avenue means you’re connected to the main routes without being stuck in the middle of highway noise all night.

  The house is very spacious and we also had access to the pool. It's clean and the staff is very professional. It's in a nice and quiet neighbourhood.
  
  What could be improved: The WiFi signal kept buffering which was really irritating on the main TV that we were using for YouTube. There was no water but that's no fault of the property, they made buckets available for use and communicated beforehand. Given the size of the place and their business, they should consider an alternative or backup.
