I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to 31 Madison Palms East, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. The name doesn’t exactly scream luxury, but this four-star spot in Sandton turned out to be one of those pleasant surprises that makes you actually excited to tell people about it.

The location is pretty brilliant, actually. You’re right in the heart of Sandton’s business district, which sounds boring until you realize it means you can walk to Nelson Mandela Square in about five minutes (and trust me, you’ll want to – the restaurants there are fantastic). I mean, being on North Road puts you close enough to everything that matters, but far enough from the main Rivonia Road chaos that you’re not dealing with constant traffic noise. The Gautrain station is maybe a ten-minute walk, which honestly saved me so much hassle getting to and from OR Tambo.

What really got me was the attention to detail inside. The rooms have this sort of understated elegance – nothing flashy, but everything just works. The beds are properly comfortable (I’m talking that sweet spot where you sink in just enough), and the air conditioning actually cools the room without sounding like a jet engine. You know what surprised me most? The water pressure in the shower. I’ve stayed at places charging twice as much where you’re basically standing under a gentle mist, but here it’s that perfect strong, hot stream that actually wakes you up in the morning. The WiFi is solid too – I had video calls running without any issues, which isn’t always a given in South Africa.

The staff deserves a mention because they’re genuinely helpful without being overbearing. The front desk guy (I think his name was Thabo) gave me some great recommendations for local spots that weren’t just the usual tourist traps. He steered me toward this incredible Ethiopian place about ten minutes away that I never would have found otherwise. Check-in was smooth, and they actually had my room ready early, which after a long flight from London was exactly what I needed.

Here’s the thing – Sandton can feel a bit sterile sometimes, all glass towers and corporate vibes, but this place manages to feel warm despite being in the thick of it. The common areas have this relaxed atmosphere where business travelers and tourists sort of naturally mix. I ended up chatting with a couple from Cape Town who were in town for meetings, and they mentioned they always stay here when they’re in Johannesburg because it just feels more personal than the big chain hotels.

The only minor thing I’d mention is that parking can get a bit tight during peak business hours – nothing terrible, but worth knowing if you’re driving. And honestly, the breakfast could use a bit more variety, though what they do have is well-prepared. But when you’re getting this level of comfort and service at this price point, in this location, those are pretty minor quibbles. I’ve already booked it again for my next trip to Joburg, which probably tells you everything you need to know.

  I didn't like that the apartment was in flats set-ups and there was a smell of dagga coming from the outside in the evenings.
  Also on the second day there was no water on the building but the host was very nice about it and the water was restored in the evening.
