When I first pulled up to 31 on Forest Road (FatsoDelux), I’ll be honest – I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the name alone. But this little three-star gem in Johannesburg turned out to be one of those pleasant surprises that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled onto something locals actually know about.

The location on Forest Road is pretty solid, actually. You’re tucked away from the main drag enough that you won’t hear traffic all night, but close enough to decent restaurants and shops that you won’t feel stranded. I mean, Johannesburg can be a bit overwhelming when you’re trying to figure out which areas are worth your time, but this spot feels residential and safe – you know what I mean? The kind of street where people walk their dogs in the evening. Parking was straightforward too, which honestly is half the battle in any South African city.

What really got me about this place was how the staff seemed to actually care about getting the details right. Check-in was quick, no fumbling around with reservations or making you wait while they figure out their system. The rooms themselves – well, they’re not going to blow you away with luxury, but they’re thoughtfully put together. Clean lines, decent Wi-Fi that actually works, and the beds are surprisingly comfortable. I’ve stayed in supposed four-star places with mattresses that felt like they were stuffed with rocks, so that was a win. The bathrooms are compact but well-designed, with water pressure that doesn’t make you want to cry (trust me, this matters more than you think when you’re traveling). There’s this attention to the practical stuff that you only really notice when it’s done right – like enough outlets near the bed, blackout curtains that actually block light, and air conditioning that doesn’t sound like a helicopter landing on the roof. You can tell someone who’s actually stayed in hotels had input on the setup here, rather than just an interior designer who’s never traveled anywhere.

  The location of the place was very secured and quiet. The furniture and set up of the room is very stylish too.
