31OnGambia Overview
I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to 31OnGambia, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this boutique spot tucked away on Gambia Road. But honestly? This place completely surprised me in the best way possible. It’s one of those four-star gems that feels way more intimate and personal than the big chain hotels you’ll find scattered around Johannesburg.
The location is actually pretty clever if you know the area. You’re in Bordeaux, which means you’re close enough to the action but far enough from the tourist chaos that can overwhelm parts of the city center. I mean, you can easily get to Sandton or even OR Tambo without dealing with the worst of Joburg traffic – and anyone who’s driven here knows that’s worth its weight in gold. The street itself is quiet, lined with jacaranda trees that create this gorgeous purple canopy when they bloom (if you’re visiting in October, you’re in for a treat). There’s actually decent street parking too, which is something I always scope out because hotel parking fees can add up fast.
What really got me about this place was the attention to detail that you just don’t see everywhere. The rooms have this modern African aesthetic that doesn’t feel forced or touristy – you know what I mean? Like, they’ve incorporated local artwork and textures without going overboard with the “Out of Africa” theme that some places push too hard. The bathrooms are surprisingly spacious, and I loved that they stock locally-made toiletries instead of the generic stuff most hotels use. The beds are seriously comfortable too – I’m picky about mattresses and actually slept better here than I do at home sometimes. You’ll appreciate the blackout curtains if you’re dealing with jet lag, and the air conditioning is quiet enough that it won’t keep you up at night.
The breakfast situation is where they really shine, though. They do this fantastic spread that mixes international options with South African favorites – the koeksisters are incredible if you’ve never tried them, and their coffee is actually good (not just hotel-lobby acceptable, but genuinely good). The staff seems to remember your preferences after a day or two, which is a nice touch that makes the place feel more like a boutique experience than just another overnight stop. I chatted with the front desk manager who’s been there since they opened, and you can tell they take pride in creating something special rather than just processing guests. The common areas have this relaxed vibe where you might actually want to hang out with a book or catch up on work – there’s fast wifi and plenty of power outlets, plus the seating is comfortable enough for longer sessions. Honestly, for the price point and the genuine hospitality, this place punches way above its weight class in a city full of expensive options that don’t always deliver.

The apartment is comfortable and spacious. The area is beautiful, the bathroom is spacious, and the bed is comfortable.
What could be improved: In the instructions, the hosts state that the apartment is on the right, but it's actually on the left. But that's just an observation. The stay was great.Wonderful – Zinhle from South Africa – August 22, 2025 (9/10)

Vicky (the host) was really kind and attentive. The place was cozy and very close to Milpark hospital. Location was great, felt really safe with the boom gates at the entrance of the road. there's such attention to detail, the nespresso, rusks and amazing bathroom products.
