I’ll be honest, when I first pulled up to 4 Lulworth in Sandton’s Hurl Park area, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this tucked-away spot. The entrance is pretty understated – you’d actually drive right past it if you weren’t looking for the address on Lulworth Grove. But that’s kind of the point, I think. This four-star boutique place feels more like staying at someone’s incredibly stylish private home than a typical hotel.

The location is what really sold me on this place. You’re in Sandton, which means you’re close to all the business district action, but Hurl Park itself is this quiet residential pocket that most tourists never discover. I could walk to the Gautrain station in about ten minutes (super handy if you’re flying in and out of OR Tambo), but the immediate neighborhood has this almost suburban calm that’s rare to find so close to the city center. The street parking is actually decent here too, which – let’s be real – is not something you can say about most of Johannesburg’s hotel areas.

What struck me most was how thoughtfully everything’s been put together. The rooms have this modern South African aesthetic that doesn’t feel forced or theme-park-ish. You know what I mean – actual local art on the walls, not mass-produced safari prints. The beds are genuinely comfortable (I’m picky about mattresses), and honestly, the shower pressure was better than what I have at home. Small details matter when you’re staying somewhere for more than a night or two, and they seem to get that here. The morning light comes in beautifully through these large windows, and if you’re an early riser like me, you’ll appreciate how quiet the street stays until around 7 AM when the neighborhood starts stirring.

I spent most evenings just relaxing in the common areas instead of heading out – which is saying something, because usually I’m restless in hotels. The staff genuinely seems to enjoy working there, which creates this relaxed atmosphere you can’t fake. They know the area well enough to give you actual recommendations beyond the obvious tourist spots. One of them pointed me toward this little coffee place about three blocks away that I never would’ve found otherwise and ended up returning to every morning.

The 9.5 rating this place has earned makes complete sense once you’ve stayed here. It’s not trying to be flashy or impress you with over-the-top amenities. Instead, it just does all the fundamentals really, really well. Clean, comfortable, thoughtfully designed, and situated in a part of the city that gives you easy access without the chaos. For business travelers who want to actually sleep well, or anyone looking for a more intimate alternative to the big chain hotels in the area, this is honestly a find. Just don’t expect a lot of signage – keep your GPS handy when you’re looking for it the first time.

  Everything was great. Only the aircon was not working and the heater was not suitable for an open plan unit , perhaps more thought on these would make other guests feel more comfortable. I'm not sure why the jacuzi was not working.

I was told that I could park at any one of the four bays , however on the second night a lady came to our unit and told me that I parked in her bay and I must not park there the next day.
