I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to 49-on-Cherry on that tree-lined street in Rand Park, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The name doesn’t give much away, you know? But man, this four-star boutique spot really surprised me in the best possible way.

The thing about Randburg is that it’s got this perfect sweet spot location – you’re close enough to Johannesburg’s business district that you won’t spend your life in traffic, but far enough out that you actually get some peace and quiet. And 49-on-Cherry really capitalizes on that. The property sits on this lovely residential street where you’ll hear birds instead of car horns, which honestly was such a relief after dealing with the usual city chaos. I mean, you’re still only about 20 minutes from Sandton City if you need serious shopping, and the Brightwater Commons is practically around the corner for your daily coffee fix.

What really got me though was how they’ve managed to feel both elegant and completely unpretentious at the same time. The rooms have this sophisticated thing going on – think clean lines, beautiful fabrics, proper lighting that doesn’t make you look terrible in photos – but it never feels stuffy or like you can’t relax. The beds are genuinely comfortable (I’m picky about this), and they’ve got these little touches that show someone actually thought about what travelers need. Decent shower pressure, enough outlets near the bed, blackout curtains that work properly. You know what I mean? The staff really knows their stuff too – they’ll give you actual useful directions to places, not just the tourist trap recommendations. When I asked about getting to the Cradle of Humankind for the day, the front desk guy drew me a little map and told me exactly which route to avoid during morning rush hour. That kind of local insight you just can’t fake. The breakfast spread was another pleasant surprise – fresh everything, and they actually make a proper flat white instead of that strange coffee-flavored water some places try to pass off. Plus there’s this lovely garden area where you can eat outside when the weather’s nice, which in Joburg is most of the time anyway. Parking was straightforward too, which anyone who’s driven around South African cities will appreciate – you don’t want to be circling blocks looking for a spot after a long day. I can see why this place has such high ratings from other travelers. It’s one of those finds that makes you feel a bit smug, like you’ve discovered something special that’s not overrun with crowds yet.

  I loved everything! This place was a so clean and comfy, I will defs be back when I'm in JHB. Sharon was amazing, she even managed to arrange a ride home from the concert we attended. It is clear that they know what they are doing at 49 on Cherry. Its quiet and beautiful. I loved that you could do your own breakfast at your own leisure time and not have to rush and get up early just to have breakie.

  49 on Cherry is perfect for a family stay. The spacious backyard/garden is the real highlight. Our little ones loved the trampoline and my husband even used the gas grill. Our only regret is that it was a bit too cold for us to use the large pool. Sharon was wonderful in letting us check in very early as we were on our way to Lion Park.

  We have just spent a wonderful week at 49 on Cherry. Sharon went out of her way to welcome us, and I don’t think we have slept in such comfortable beds with such quality linen before. I will be dreaming about those beds! Everything was spotless in our suite, laundry was done super fast, and the garden and trampoline a bonus. We highly recommend 49. Fast internet, secure property, and great facilities.
