They’re not wrong. This four-star spot on Sturdee Avenue actually delivers on pretty much everything that ridiculously long name promises, and I mean that in the best way possible.

The location is genuinely brilliant if you know Johannesburg at all. Sturdee Avenue puts you right in that sweet spot where you’re close enough to Rosebank Mall that you can literally walk there in five minutes (they weren’t exaggerating), but far enough away that you don’t get the constant traffic noise that plagues some of the hotels right on Oxford Road. I stayed here twice last year, and both times I was surprised by how quiet it actually gets at night – something about the way the building sits back from the main drag. The parking situation is refreshingly straightforward too, which anyone who’s driven around Joburg’s northern suburbs will appreciate. No weird valet nonsense or cramped spaces, just proper covered parking that doesn’t make you nervous about leaving your car.

What really won me over though was the pool area – and I’m usually pretty skeptical about hotel pools. This one’s actually big enough to do proper laps if you’re into that sort of thing, surrounded by these comfortable loungers that don’t look like they’ve seen better days. The wifi lives up to the hype too, which matters more than you’d think when you’re trying to upload photos or catch up on work. I spent a few mornings working poolside with my laptop, and honestly, the connection was better than what I get at home. The cinema thing is a bit quirky – it’s more like a really well-equipped media room than a proper theater, but perfect for a rainy Highveld afternoon. Staff seemed to genuinely know what they were doing, not just going through the motions, and check-in was refreshingly efficient. The rooms themselves strike that nice balance between modern and comfortable without trying too hard to be trendy. You get the sense that someone actually thought about what travelers need rather than just what looks good in photos.
