I’ll be honest – when I first walked into 523 Michelangelo, I wasn’t expecting much from the understated entrance on Maude Street. But you know what? Sometimes the best places in Johannesburg are the ones that don’t need to shout about themselves. This four-star boutique spot has this quietly sophisticated thing going on that really grows on you.

The location is actually pretty brilliant if you know Sandton at all. You’re literally in the heart of Sandton Central, which means you can walk to Nelson Mandela Square in about three minutes (I timed it), and the Gautrain station is close enough that you’ll hear the occasional rumble – though it’s never loud enough to bother you. What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed to create this calm bubble despite being surrounded by all the business district energy. The rooms have this modern Italian-inspired design that feels genuine, not like someone just threw some generic “luxury” furniture together. The bathrooms are particularly well done – marble that actually feels substantial, and the shower pressure is consistently good (which, let’s face it, can be hit or miss in this part of town).

Here’s what really won me over though – the staff actually remembers your preferences after a couple of days. I mean, they’re not overly familiar or anything, just professionally attentive in that way that makes business travelers feel less anonymous. The restaurant serves decent Italian food that’s a step above hotel standard, and honestly, their coffee is some of the better stuff I’ve had in Sandton. Parking is secure and included, which saves you the headache of street parking around here. The only minor thing is that some of the rooms facing Maude Street can get a bit of traffic noise during morning rush hour, but it dies down pretty quickly. If you’re someone who needs absolute silence, just ask for a room on the other side. The pool area is small but well-maintained – more for a quick dip than serious swimming, but it does the job. What strikes me most is that this place feels like it knows exactly what it is: a solid, comfortable base in one of Johannesburg’s busiest areas that doesn’t try to be flashy but gets all the important details right.

  What could be improved: Major repeated issues with the air conditioner which was very frustrating as I had to repeatedly ask for it to be attended and only in the 3rd day of my stay was it actually fixed. minor things: the kitchen was a little under resourced eg only 3 forks, a couple of glasses etc. coffee table needs replacing- brings the whole tone of the room down as it is damaged and tatty, I missed having a hairdryer. otherwise it was lovely.

  The room is more like an apartment – it was huge and is much bigger than the pictures. Friendly host, the room was very clean, the internet was fast and the location perfect. The facilities were great.
  
  What could be improved: The room was hot and the aircon wasn’t very powerful. Outside was very loud so we couldn’t open the doors to let air in. I suggest including a fan in the room as this would solve both problems. More toilet paper needed to be kept and some bin bags too would be helpful.
