You know what? I’ve stayed at a lot of places in Johannesburg over the years, but 54 on Bath, Johannesburg Rosebank genuinely surprised me. I mean, I was expecting another standard business hotel, but this five-star boutique property feels more like staying at a wealthy friend’s incredibly well-appointed home. The location on Bath Avenue is honestly perfect – you’re right in the heart of Rosebank where you can actually walk places, which anyone who knows Johannesburg will tell you is pretty rare for this city.

The first thing that hits you when you walk in is how they’ve managed to make luxury feel approachable. The lobby has this gorgeous contemporary African art collection, and I actually ended up chatting with the manager about one of the pieces – turns out they work with local artists, which you don’t see everywhere. My room had floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out over the leafy suburb, and honestly, the bed was one of those where you sink in and immediately think “okay, I’m not leaving early.” The bathroom was all marble and had one of those rainfall showers that actually works properly, plus they stock really good toiletries – not the usual generic stuff. What I really appreciated was the little touches: there’s a Nespresso machine (obviously), but they also had rooibos tea and these amazing locally-made rusks that I may have eaten too many of.

The restaurant downstairs serves what I’d call elevated comfort food – their ostrich carpaccio is something I still think about, and their wine list focuses heavily on South African bottles that you won’t find at your typical hotel. Service was attentive without being hovering, which is a delicate balance that they’ve figured out. The only minor thing is that Bath Avenue can get a bit busy during rush hour, but honestly, with Rosebank Mall literally across the street and the Gautrain station a five-minute walk away, you’re not really stuck anywhere. I ended up walking to Zone in the evening for drinks, and it felt completely safe – rare for Joburg after dark. The hotel also sorted out reliable airport transfers without any fuss, which saved me the usual stress of navigating OR Tambo logistics. If you’re doing business in Sandton, it’s an easy Gautrain ride, and if you want to explore, you’re perfectly positioned. This place gets the details right in a way that makes you want to come back, which for a city like Johannesburg where hotel experiences can be hit or miss, is saying something.
