Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to 58 On Hume – I mean, Randburg isn’t exactly where you’d picture finding a five-star boutique hotel, you know? But this place completely surprised me in the best way possible. The moment you walk through those doors, it’s like stepping into someone’s incredibly stylish private home rather than a typical hotel. The staff actually remembered my name after one night (and trust me, I have one of those forgettable names), which says something about how they operate here.

What really sets this place apart is how they’ve managed to create something genuinely special in Johannesburg without trying too hard. The rooms are spacious – and I mean properly spacious, not that “spacious by hotel standards” nonsense – with these gorgeous high ceilings and carefully chosen furniture that feels both elegant and lived-in. You’ll find little touches everywhere that show someone actually thought about what guests need: proper reading lights, enough power outlets in sensible places, and bathrooms with decent water pressure (honestly, why is that so rare?). The breakfast situation is particularly good – they do this amazing selection of local and continental options, and the coffee is strong enough to wake the dead, which I definitely needed after exploring the Joburg nightlife.

Here’s what I wish someone had told me before my first visit: the location on Hume Road is actually brilliant once you understand the area. You’re close enough to Sandton’s business district for easy access, but far enough away to avoid the chaos and traffic headaches. Plus, there’s decent parking (which, let’s be honest, matters a lot in this city), and the neighborhood has this quiet, residential feel that makes you sleep better at night. The hotel runs at about 9.5 out of 10 for good reason – the attention to detail is remarkable, from the way they handle your luggage to how they’ll sort out restaurant recommendations that aren’t just the usual tourist traps. I’ve stayed here three times now, and each visit has been consistently excellent, which is saying something because I’m pretty picky about these things. If you’re looking for somewhere that feels more like a home base than a generic hotel room, this is your spot.

  This was an oasis inside Johannesburg. 58 on Hume is a beautifully decorated, expansive (I would guess) former home that has been converted to a small hotel. It is absolutely stunning and the Proprietor Michelle has thought of absolutely everything you could ever want or need during your stay. Our room was very large and extremely comfortable. The living area was beautifully appointed and so inviting with a nice fire and views of the beautiful yard and pool area. Michelle and her team are incredible welcoming and accommodating. It was the perfect set up and we will definitely stay again! And the breakfast- exceptional!

  Located in a quiet street, the rooms are cozy and comfortable with high quality bed linen and towels. There are nice teas, coffee and small treats. The garden with pool and veranda is lush and beautiful. The staff is very friendly and happy to assist.
  
  What could be improved: I booked the last room available and probably therefore got the least nice one. It was street facing and overlooked the parking area.
  There was no door to the bathroom, hence no privacy if staying with two people. Because there is no bathroom door, the room was light in the early morning despite the blockout curtains in the bedroom.
  The breakfast was excellent but although I had notified the guesthouse that I am gluten free, there was no gluten free bread on the first day. This was however rectified on the second morning.
  I didn’t appreciate the dogs begging at the breakfast table every day.

  I have stayed at 58 on Hume a number of times.
  It is an island of serenity close to the busy commercial hubs of Rosebank and Sandton, with many fine restaurants nearby. Michelle and her well-trained staff are always friendly, helpful and efficient.
  The rooms are spacious, well-appointed and quiet, and the breakfast is excellent.
  Importantly, the owners have taken all the steps necessary to counter the twin scourges of periodic power and water shortages that the city administrators have inflicted upon the inhabitants of Johannesburg, which makes for a very comfortable stay.

  Gorgeous property, fabulous staff. Nothing is too much trouble for Michelle and her team, who make this a true home from home. The breakfast and the home cooked evening meals are delicious. The room is big and comfortable, and is provisioned with everything you could possibly need. Absolutely fabulous.
