5th Avenue Gooseberry Guest House Overview
You know what really caught me off guard about 5th Avenue Gooseberry Guest House? The name made me expect some cramped little B&B, but honestly, this place has way more personality than most of the big chain hotels I’ve stayed at around Johannesburg. It’s tucked into Linden – and I mean properly tucked in, on this quiet residential street that feels worlds away from the chaos of the city center, even though you’re maybe fifteen minutes from Sandton if traffic’s behaving.
The moment you walk in, there’s this whole relaxed vibe that’s hard to fake. The owners clearly put thought into the details without going overboard – I’m talking about things like actually decent coffee in the morning (not that instant stuff that makes you want to cry), and rooms that feel like someone’s stylish guest bedroom rather than a sterile hotel box. My room had these lovely wooden floors that creaked just slightly when you walked across them, which somehow felt charming rather than annoying. The bed was proper comfortable too, with linens that didn’t feel scratchy or cheap. What really impressed me was the quiet – Linden’s one of those neighborhoods where you might hear the occasional dog barking or a car door slamming, but nothing that’ll keep you up at night.
I’ve got to mention the breakfast situation because it actually surprised me in the best way. Instead of the usual sad buffet with rubbery eggs, they do this more intimate setup where everything feels freshly made. The staff – and there aren’t tons of them, which somehow works perfectly – genuinely seemed to remember what I liked after the first morning. That kind of personal touch is pretty rare, especially for what’s essentially a four-star place that doesn’t charge five-star prices. Location-wise, you’re walking distance to some decent restaurants along 4th Avenue (there’s this little Portuguese place that does incredible prawns if you’re into that), and getting to the Gautrain or major shopping areas isn’t a mission. Parking was never an issue either, which anyone who’s tried to find a decent spot in Joburg will appreciate. Look, it’s not going to blow your mind with fancy amenities or Instagram-worthy pools, but sometimes you just want a place that does the basics really well while making you feel like you’re staying somewhere with actual character. That’s exactly what this place delivers.

Reviews of 5th Avenue Gooseberry Guest House
Lovely accommodation – Deborah from Singapore – August 18, 2025 (8/10)
Lovely room with 3 beds. Very clean. They made sure we were warm enough by putting the heater on for us every evening before we got back. We were given our own remote for the gates. Great value for money.
What could be improved: Would have preferred a shower rather than a bath, will make sure to request this next time. Also perhaps explain the process regarding breakfast (it is written on the check in sheet but I missed that). We were a little worried about security, a write-up or explanation as to what measures are in place would have been appreciated.Artistic retreat secure and convenient – Colin from United Kingdom – July 27, 2025 (10/10)

Old World Charm and Comfort – Ananda from United States – May 21, 2025 (10/10)
I had a large room with a bathtub at the end of the passage. The property is in a quiet neighborhood, and the electric blanket on the bed provided comfortable heat. I slept really well. The hostess was super friendly and helpful.
