Honestly, when I first pulled up to 6 on Morris Guest Lodge, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect – it’s tucked away on Morris Street East in a way that makes it feel like a bit of a hidden gem rather than your typical four-star spot. But you know what? Sometimes those are exactly the places that surprise you the most.

The thing about staying in Johannesburg is that location really matters, and this place gets it right without shouting about it. Woodmead isn’t the flashiest area, but it’s actually pretty smart if you’re doing business around Sandton or need to get to OR Tambo without dealing with the chaos of the city center. I mean, you’re close enough to everything that matters, but far enough away that you can actually get some sleep at night. The lodge itself has this sort of residential feel – it’s in what feels like a converted house, which I actually loved because it doesn’t have that sterile hotel vibe that can make you feel like you’re sleeping in an office building.

The rooms are well thought out in that practical way that tells me someone who actually travels had input on the design. Good lighting for reading, decent desk space if you need to work, and – this might sound small but it’s not – properly functioning Wi-Fi that doesn’t cut out every twenty minutes. The breakfast situation is solid without being fancy; they do the basics really well, and the coffee is strong enough to get you moving in the morning. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays, even when they’re busy. You know how some places have paper-thin walls where you end up knowing way too much about your neighbors? Not an issue here. The staff runs things efficiently without being overly formal – they’ll give you honest directions and actually know the area, which is refreshing when you’re trying to figure out the best route somewhere or need a restaurant recommendation that isn’t just the closest chain place. Parking is straightforward too, which anyone who’s driven around Joburg will tell you is not something to take for granted.

Look, it’s not going to wow you with a rooftop pool or marble everything, but that’s sort of the point. It’s the kind of place where everything just works the way it should, and you end up sleeping better and feeling more settled than you expected. If you’re the type who needs five-star luxury and room service, this probably isn’t your spot. But if you want somewhere reliable, comfortable, and genuinely well-run without paying premium prices for amenities you won’t use anyway – well, I’d definitely stay here again next time I’m in town.
