7th Street Guesthouse Overview

You know what struck me first about 7th Street Guesthouse? It’s tucked away on this quiet residential street in Melville, and I mean actually quiet – not that “quiet location” nonsense you read everywhere that turns out to be next to a construction site. When I walked up to number 22, I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect from a four-star guesthouse, but the place has this relaxed, almost homey vibe that immediately puts you at ease.

The thing about staying in Johannesburg is that location really matters, and Melville is one of those neighborhoods that locals actually hang out in. I spent most evenings wandering down to 7th Street itself (hence the name, I assume) where there’s this great little strip of restaurants and bars. The guesthouse staff – and they genuinely seem to care about what you’re up to – pointed me toward Ant Cafe for breakfast, which became my daily ritual. It’s maybe a three-minute walk, if that. What I appreciated was that they didn’t just hand me a generic tourist map; they actually knew the area and could tell me which places were worth my time versus the tourist traps.

The rooms themselves are comfortable without being fancy – I mean, we’re talking about a guesthouse here, not some corporate hotel chain. My room had this nice big window that looked out onto the leafy street, and honestly, waking up to that view beat staring at another building any day. The bed was solid (I’m picky about mattresses), and there’s actually decent water pressure in the shower, which you can’t take for granted everywhere in South Africa. One small thing that annoyed me initially was the Wi-Fi being a bit spotty in the evenings – I think everyone’s streaming at once – but it sorted itself out after a day or two. The breakfast spread is nothing revolutionary, but it’s fresh and filling, and they make a proper cup of coffee.

What really sold me on this place, though, was how easy it made exploring Joburg feel. Melville sits perfectly between the city center and areas like Rosebank and Sandton, so you’re never more than a 15-minute Uber ride from wherever you need to be. I used it as a base for visiting the Apartheid Museum (definitely worth the trip) and even made it out to the Cradle of Humankind on a day trip. The staff helped arrange transport without any hassle, and their recommendations were spot-on – they sent me to a local braai place in Parkhurst that I never would have found on my own. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if you want to experience Johannesburg like someone who actually lives there rather than just passing through.

Tourism in Johannesburg offers travelers the opportunity to explore the heart of South Africa’s economic hub, with easy access to bustling markets, historic sites, and renowned attractions like the Cradle of Humankind.
