Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of places in Johannesburg over the years, but 8 at Norman Crescent honestly surprised me in the best way possible. You know those boutique spots that feel more like staying at a ridiculously well-appointed friend’s house than a typical hotel? That’s exactly what this place is – and the four-star rating doesn’t even capture how thoughtfully everything’s been put together.

The location in Randburg is actually perfect if you want to avoid the hustle of central Johannesburg but still be close enough to everything that matters. Norman Crescent itself is this quiet, tree-lined street that feels worlds away from the main roads, though you’re literally minutes from the Gautrain station and major shopping areas. I mean, you can walk to Cresta in about ten minutes if you need anything, but honestly, you might not want to leave once you settle in. The whole setup feels residential – which it basically is, since it’s converted from what was clearly someone’s gorgeous home – and there’s something really calming about pulling up to what looks like an upscale house rather than another glass-and-steel hotel lobby.

What really got me was the attention to detail throughout the property. The rooms are spacious (and I mean properly spacious, not hotel-brochure spacious), with these lovely high ceilings and period features that remind you you’re in a building with some history. The bathrooms are particularly well done – rainfall showers, quality toiletries, the kind of towels you actually want to wrap yourself in. But it’s the little things that stick with you: the way they’ve managed the lighting so it actually feels warm and homey, the fact that the Wi-Fi works flawlessly throughout (trust me, this isn’t always a given), and how quiet everything is despite being in a relatively busy area. I slept better there than I have in ages, which probably explains that 9.3 rating – though honestly, I would’ve guessed even higher.

The staff runs the place more like a guesthouse than a traditional hotel, which means you get that personal touch without anyone hovering. They know the area inside and out, so if you need restaurant recommendations or directions to somewhere off the beaten path, you’re getting advice from people who actually live here rather than corporate talking points. Parking‘s never an issue either, which anyone who’s driven around Johannesburg will tell you is worth its weight in gold. The whole experience feels effortless in a way that’s surprisingly rare – you check in, settle into your beautiful room, and everything just works exactly as it should.

  What could be improved: The property isn't ideal for small dogs like our two Yorkshire Terriers since they could slip through the fence, so we kept them on a leash the whole time. Other than that, everything was great!

  Our stay was absolutely fantastic. We were warmly welcomed by our hosts, received many tips (where to eat in the area, where are the sights – even a Soweto tour in our car with private guide was organised). The house offers enough space for four people, the bedrooms have their own bathrooms (one with bathtub and one with two showers). The kitchen and living area are also well equipped. There is also a pool in the spacious outdoor area. A trip to Northcliff Hill with a breathtaking view over Johannesburg is definitely worth it. Again, a special praise to our hosts, who were always available and enriched our stay so much.
  In addition, it should be mentioned that the flat is always supplied with electricity even in load shedding thanks to a solar system (only one bedroom was without electricity).
