I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to 84 on Fourth Guest House, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this quiet corner of Melville. You know how it is with guest houses, they can be hit or miss. But this place actually surprised me in the best way possible. There’s something refreshingly unpretentious about how it sits on 4th Avenue, tucked away from the main hustle but still close enough that you can walk to those trendy Melville spots everyone talks about.

The thing that struck me right away was how the owners have managed to keep that homey feel without sacrificing the polish you’d want from a four-star place. I mean, the rooms aren’t huge – this isn’t some sprawling hotel complex – but they’re thoughtfully put together with those little touches that show someone actually cares. The bedding is properly comfortable (and I’m picky about that), and honestly, the shower pressure is better than what I have at home. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night, even though you’re still in Johannesburg. Melville can get pretty lively, especially on weekends, but somehow this little pocket stays peaceful.

The breakfast situation is where they really shine though – it’s one of those setups where you feel like you’re eating at someone’s well-appointed home rather than grabbing something generic from a buffet. The staff actually remembers your coffee preference after day one, which sounds small but makes such a difference when you’re traveling. Parking was straightforward too, which anyone who’s driven around Joburg will tell you is not something to take for granted. I stayed during a busy period and never had trouble finding a spot. You’re also perfectly positioned to explore Melville’s restaurant scene on foot – 7th Street is literally a few minutes’ walk, and that’s where all the good eating happens. The whole experience just felt… well, like staying with friends who happen to have impeccable taste and actually know how to host properly.
