I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Advas Place – Grand 5 on Shelley Street, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. The name had me curious (what’s with the “Grand 5” part?), but stepping inside, everything clicked. This four-star spot has that boutique hotel feel that’s becoming harder and harder to find, especially in Johannesburg where so many places either go full corporate chain or try too hard to be quirky.

What really won me over was how the staff actually seemed to know the neighborhood inside and out. You know how some hotels give you those generic tourist maps? Here, the front desk guy literally drew me a little route to avoid the construction on the main road and pointed out this incredible Ethiopian place two blocks over that I never would’ve found otherwise. The rooms themselves are well thought out – not massive, but clever with storage, and honestly, the beds are fantastic. I’m someone who usually tosses and turns the first night in a new place, but I slept like a baby. The only minor thing is that if you’re on the street side, you’ll hear some traffic in the mornings, but it’s not deal-breaking loud or anything.

The location is actually pretty perfect if you want to feel like you’re staying somewhere real rather than in a tourist bubble. Shelley Street has this great mix of local businesses and places that cater to visitors without being touristy, if that makes sense. I could walk to several good coffee shops (there’s one with amazing pastries about three minutes away), and getting around the city was straightforward from here. The hotel’s got that comfortable, lived-in vibe where you can tell they’ve been doing this for a while and have figured out what works. With an 8.7 rating, I mean, clearly other people are picking up on the same thing I did – it’s just a solid, comfortable place run by people who care about getting the details right.

Places near me in Johannesburg offer convenient access to major landmarks, where visitors can easily reach Apartheid Museum, Carlton Centre, and world-famous shopping districts in the bustling Sandton area.

  I liked the support we received from Polly. And the communication from the host. was incredible stay and will definitely come again. safe and secure and extremely neat.
  
  What could be improved: the upstairs shower and toilet can do with a subtle revamp. we used the en-suite in the first bedroom and it was amazing. nice pressure on the geyser and well heated temperature.
