I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Akaru Apartments on Berkeley Avenue, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. Bryanston isn’t exactly where most tourists end up, but honestly? That turned out to be one of its biggest selling points. This four-star spot sits in one of those quieter residential pockets where you actually hear birds instead of constant traffic, which is pretty rare for Johannesburg.

The apartments themselves are spacious – I mean really spacious compared to your typical hotel room. Mine had this open-plan setup with a proper kitchen (not just a mini-fridge and microwave situation) and a living area that actually felt liveable. The décor is modern without being sterile, though I’d say it leans more practical than Instagram-worthy. What really got me was the attention to small details – decent water pressure, blackout curtains that actually block light, and enough power outlets that you’re not playing musical chairs with your devices. The staff at check-in were genuinely helpful too, not just going through the motions. They pointed me toward a great little coffee spot about two blocks away that I never would’ve found otherwise.

Location-wise, you’re about fifteen minutes from Sandton if you need to be in the thick of things, but Bryanston itself has this laid-back suburban vibe that grows on you. There’s a Woolworths and a few decent restaurants within walking distance – nothing fancy, but convenient when you don’t feel like venturing far. The parking situation is actually stress-free, which anyone who’s driven in Joburg will appreciate. I stayed during a quieter period in April, so I can’t speak to how crazy it gets during peak season, but the whole area felt pretty peaceful. The only minor gripe I had was that the Wi-Fi could be a bit patchy in the evenings when everyone’s streaming, but it was fine for work stuff during the day. Look, with a 7.2 rating, it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but sometimes that’s exactly what you want – somewhere comfortable and unpretentious where you can actually relax without feeling like you need to dress up to walk through the lobby.
