Alcazaba Hotel Overview

I’ll be honest, when I first pulled up to Alcazaba Hotel on Albertina Sisulu Street in Fordsburg, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The neighborhood has this interesting mix of old Johannesburg character and newer developments, and you can tell this area’s been through some changes over the years. But once you step inside this four-star place, it actually surprises you – there’s this warm, welcoming atmosphere that immediately puts you at ease.

The thing about staying in Fordsburg is that you’re really getting an authentic slice of Jo’burg life that most tourists completely miss. I mean, you’re walking distance from some incredible Indian restaurants and spice shops that have been family-run for generations, and the street life here is genuinely fascinating if you take time to wander around during the day. The hotel staff – and this is something I really appreciated – they actually know the area well and can point you toward the good local spots rather than just rattling off the usual tourist traps. The rooms themselves are comfortable enough, though I’d say they lean more toward functional than fancy. You know what struck me most? The attention to small details – decent water pressure in the shower (always a relief in older Jo’burg buildings), proper blackout curtains that actually work, and surprisingly good soundproofing considering you’re on a busy street.

What really sold me on this place was how it feels like a proper local experience without sacrificing comfort. The breakfast area has this relaxed vibe where you’ll end up chatting with other guests, and honestly, some of my best travel tips came from conversations over morning coffee there. Parking can be a bit tricky during busy periods – there’s street parking but you’ll want to ask at reception about the best spots. The location works really well if you’re planning to explore beyond the usual Sandton and Rosebank circuit, and getting into the city center is straightforward from here. It’s not going to blow you away with luxury, but there’s something genuinely welcoming about the whole experience that keeps drawing me back when I’m in town.

  • An unexpected surprise… – Paulette from Canada – July 18, 2024 (8/10)

The reservation turned out to be a full-sized, very nicely decorated apartment which very much exceeded our expectations as we had only an overnight layover between flights. It was on the second floor of a modern building with an elevator and 24-hour reception in a very interesting part of the city with a large Muslim population, a muezzin calling to prayer, and a Syrian restaurant right below where we had dinner.

What could be improved: The bathroom was large enough and clean enough, and the shower had lots of hot water but it could use a bit of a tune-up. Some may feel a bit uncomfortable in an ethnic enclave but we quite enjoyed it.

  • Very Good – Kealeboga from South Africa – May 20, 2024 (8/10)

    The staff was great

  • Thank you – Melissa from United States – April 17, 2024 (8/10)

Great showers. Smoking area. Good. Breakfast to pay for

What could be improved: Dangerous area

  • Very Good – Alexander from Australia – April 2, 2024 (8/10)

Very comfortable beds, friendly and helpful staff

What could be improved: Twin room had a bizarrely exposed bath, shower and toilet. Why the bathroom couldn’t be closed off into a second room like most hotels is beyond me.

  • Relaxed – Toshikan from Japan – March 4, 2024 (8/10)

    The staff is polite
They told me some advice about staying.

  • Relaxing and quiet – Siyabonga from South Africa – March 4, 2024 (8/10)

    The cleanliness and safety

  • It was convenient and comfortable. – Thabile from South Africa – February 18, 2024 (8/10)

The facilities inside were clean and well put together. It gave luxury vibes. They upgraded our room which was great as I was travelling with my son to arrange registration and residence matters.

What could be improved: Location initially seems shady & dowtown kind of. But it was close to campus and were able to quickly get to where we needed to go.
