Anka Lodge Overview
I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Anka Lodge on Cross Avenue, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like just another Sandton guesthouse. But you know what? This place completely changed my mind about boutique accommodations in Johannesburg. The building itself has this understated elegance that somehow manages to feel both sophisticated and welcoming at the same time, which is honestly pretty rare in this part of town.
What really got me was how the staff actually remembered my name after the first day – I mean, we’re talking about a four-star property here, not some massive chain where you’re just another room number. The owner clearly knows what they’re doing because every detail feels intentional, from the locally-sourced art in the lobby to the way they’ve managed to keep street noise to basically nothing despite being right in the heart of Sandton’s business district. Speaking of location, you’re literally a five-minute walk from Sandton City and Nelson Mandela Square, but tucked away enough that you won’t hear the usual urban chaos at night. I actually slept better here than I have at some of those big-name hotels that charge twice as much.
The rooms themselves strike this perfect balance between modern comfort and character – they’ve got all the essentials you’d expect (proper air conditioning, thank goodness, because Johannesburg summers are no joke) but with these thoughtful touches that make you feel like you’re staying somewhere special rather than just another generic hotel room. The breakfast spread impressed me too, especially since they source ingredients from local suppliers, and honestly, their coffee puts most of the chain hotels in the area to shame. What sealed the deal for me was the parking situation – secure, covered, and included, which anyone who’s spent time navigating Sandton traffic will tell you is worth its weight in gold. If you’re looking for somewhere that feels personal but professional, somewhere you can actually relax after dealing with the hustle of central Johannesburg, this is your spot.
Johannesburg travel planning should be done early, especially during peak season when the city hosts internationally celebrated events and festivals in Newtown and other iconic cultural districts.

What could be improved: NothingKatherine is an amazing hostess, who really cares about her guests. – Allan from United States – June 24, 2025 (10/10)
ANKA Lodge is a great place to stay. The room is huge and comes with a kitchenette. Katherine, the owner, was so accommodating. We had to leave early for a tour on our last day and she allowed us to keep our baggage in the room until we returned.
There is a small shopping mall within walking distance that has a market, drugstore, and restaurants. While it is situated a little bit away from the action, it was nothing that a short inexpensive Uber ride couldn’t take care of.
This is a very small property with only six rooms so you will get plenty of personal attention and you’re every need will be taken care of.

Anka lodge, a perfect home away from home. – Mak from South Africa – May 25, 2025 (9/10)
It was just a perfect home away from home and an extra bed was brought in to qccomodate my toddler which was grear. Spacious bachelor unit with all that we needed and we were close to all shops you could think of, easy in and out access and amazing location. Host was polite and gave us space to feel home which is a rare find with bookings lately. Loved it! Definately coming back!
