You know what really surprised me about the Apex Rosebank Retreat? It’s tucked away on Cradock Avenue in this converted apartment building that feels nothing like a typical hotel – and I mean that in the best possible way. When I first walked up to number 37, I honestly wasn’t sure I was in the right place because it looks more like a stylish residential building than your standard accommodation. But that’s exactly what makes it work so well in Johannesburg.

The whole setup is pretty clever, actually. You’re staying in what’s essentially a proper apartment (mine was 126 on the first floor), which means you get a real kitchen, decent living space, and – this was huge for me – you don’t feel like you’re living on top of other travelers. The three-star rating might make you think it’s basic, but honestly, I’ve stayed in so-called luxury places that felt way more cramped and impersonal. What struck me most was how quiet everything was, especially considering you’re right in Rosebank. I mean, this area can get pretty bustling during the day with all the shopping and business activity, but once you’re inside, it’s surprisingly peaceful.

The location is actually brilliant if you know Johannesburg at all. You can walk to the Gautrain station in about ten minutes – which, let’s be honest, is gold in this city – and you’re literally surrounded by some of the best shopping and restaurants in the northern suburbs. I spent most evenings just wandering around the Rosebank area, grabbing dinner at places I could actually walk to safely. The staff clearly gets that most of their guests are either business travelers or people who want to explore the city properly, so they’re really good with local recommendations that go beyond the obvious tourist spots. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward too – no lengthy speeches about amenities or trying to upsell you on breakfast packages. They just get you sorted and let you settle in, which I appreciated after a long flight. With a 9.3 rating from guests, it’s clear I’m not the only one who found this place to be a proper gem rather than just somewhere to crash for the night.
