I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Ava Guest House on Majuba Avenue, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. Randburg isn’t exactly the flashiest part of Johannesburg, but you know what? That turned out to be exactly why this place works so well. It’s tucked away in this quiet residential area where you can actually hear birds in the morning instead of traffic, which is pretty rare for Jo’burg.

The moment you step inside, it’s clear this isn’t your typical four-star spot trying too hard to impress. The owner – I think her name was Sarah – greeted me personally at check-in, and I mean actually knew my name and asked about my flight without looking at notes. The rooms are what I’d call thoughtfully done rather than fancy. Everything’s clean and comfortable, with those little touches that show someone actually cares – proper reading lights by the bed, decent water pressure in the shower, and coffee that doesn’t taste like it came from a packet. The Wi-Fi actually works throughout the property too, which honestly can’t be taken for granted in some parts of the city.

What really sold me on this place though was how Sarah pointed out the good local spots without the usual tourist trap recommendations. She mentioned this little Portuguese bakery about ten minutes’ walk away that does incredible pastéis de nata, and a proper braai place where locals go on weekends. The location is actually pretty clever when you think about it – you’re close enough to get to Sandton City or the Cradle of Humankind without the hassle, but far enough out that you’re not dealing with city center chaos. Parking is right there on the property, which anyone who’s driven in Jo’burg will tell you is worth its weight in gold. I stayed during what turned out to be a busy weekend, and while I could hear some conversation from the courtyard area in the evening, it wasn’t the kind of noise that keeps you awake – more like that pleasant background hum of people actually enjoying themselves. The breakfast was simple but really well done – fresh fruit, proper eggs made to order, and decent coffee. None of that buffet nonsense that’s been sitting under heat lamps. By my last morning, I was genuinely sad to leave, which doesn’t happen often at hotels anymore.
