B&B on 8th Avenue Overview
You know what struck me first about B&B on 8th Avenue? It’s tucked away in this quiet residential pocket of Melville that honestly feels more like staying at a friend’s stylish home than a typical guesthouse. I mean, Johannesburg can be pretty intense, but this little street has this almost village-like calm that you don’t expect to find so close to everything.
The owners have clearly put real thought into this place – it’s got that four-star polish without feeling stuffy or impersonal. The rooms are spacious (actually spacious, not hotel-brochure spacious), and each one feels individually designed rather than cookie-cutter identical. What I loved was the attention to local touches – there’s original South African art on the walls and they use these beautiful locally-made ceramics for breakfast service. Speaking of breakfast, they do this proper spread with fresh fruit, good coffee, and they’ll make you eggs however you want them. None of that sad continental buffet stuff.
Location-wise, you’re perfectly positioned in Melville, which honestly might be my favorite neighborhood in Joburg. You can walk to 7th Street for dinner – there’s this whole strip of restaurants and bars that gets lively in the evenings but isn’t so crazy that you can’t sleep (the B&B is just far enough away from the main action). During the day, the area has this artsy, bohemian vibe with little galleries and coffee shops scattered around. Parking is actually straightforward here, which anyone who’s tried to navigate Johannesburg will appreciate – they have secure off-street spots, so you don’t have to stress about your car. The hosts are genuinely helpful too, not in that scripted hospitality way, but like they actually want you to experience the best of their neighborhood. They’ll point you toward the local spots that aren’t in guidebooks and give you realistic advice about getting around the city. I stayed during a quieter period in autumn, and it felt like having this peaceful home base while still being connected to all the energy that makes Joburg fascinating.
To visit Johannesburg during the vibrant spring season from September to November, travelers should plan ahead as this cosmopolitan city attracts millions of visitors seeking authentic South African experiences and world-class cultural attractions.

Denise was a wonderful host. It was a pleasure to chat with her about this and that and she was so helpful with my daily trips. The house is situated in Mellville in a safe area. It is a lovely house with a small garden. The rooms are decorated beautifully and the bed was very comfortable. I had booked breakfast and was served a nice and fresh breakfast every morning. If I ever come back to Johannesburg I‘ll definitely stay there again.
A comfortable place to stay with a neighborhood feel. – Kathleen from United States – August 15, 2025 (10/10)
The B&B was within walking distance of downtown Melville, which featured several nice restaurants and shops. The host offered a fine breakfast, including granola, toast, fresh fruit, juice, coffee and tea. In addition she cooked eggs, bacon, and sausages. The beds had electric blankets, in case the nights were chilly, which were much appreciated.
What could be improved: Actually, we had no complaints.Exceptional – Dorcas from United States – August 13, 2025 (10/10)

The location on its own is a 10/10. Quiet and safe neighbourhood, far from the busy CBD and loud bars.
The Perfect End to My Trip in Jo’burg – Yoo from South Korea – July 25, 2025 (10/10)
I stayed at Denis' BnB on 8th Avenue for two nights—the final stop on my trip to Johannesburg—and I’m so glad I chose to stay there. Her BnB is beautifully maintained and thoughtfully equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. Even in winter, the space felt warm and cozy, especially with the electric blanket she provided. The garden is lovely and offers a sense of calm, even during the colder season.
Denis, who is also a tour guide, is incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and a joy to talk to. When I faced some difficulties with my tour, she generously shared her insights and experiences, which helped me navigate the situation smoothly. Her breakfast is not only delicious but also a wonderful opportunity to chat with her and other guests—it really adds to the homely atmosphere.
Johannesburg can be a challenging city to explore as a tourist, but Denis' BnB provided a peaceful and welcoming retreat after long days out. The neighborhood is safe and pleasant to walk around, and I especially enjoyed morning strolls after breakfast.
I highly recommend staying at Denis’ BnB to anyone visiting Jo'burg—it’s a warm, restful, and truly special place.Cozy and Warm, Very Confortable Place! – Gabriel from Brazil – July 13, 2025 (9/10)
Denise's acommodation is really well prepared to receive any one who wants, as the title says, a cozy and warm place to be, specially if it's winter, like it was for me and my wife. The room has everything you need to not leave the room, if you wish – really really well equipped. The bath is really warm, it has a hitter at our disposal, and the bed even has it's own hitter, on both sides. The TV has netflix, the towels are good and fluffly, the sheets, the pillows, the banklets, everything of really good quality. On the outside of your room, you will find also a little table with two chairs and – for the smokers – an ashtray to call yours.
As if all of this wasn't enough, you are allowed to use the kitchen and the common area (there is a fireplace in the living room) of the house, in which Denise leaves, on the top floor. Don't worry, though, you will have your privacy.
To finalize, about the location: Melville is not that close to the center and Mandela Square, for example, but the house is really well located at Melville, being less than 5 minutes of walking distance from the neighbourhood's most cool restaurants and bars.
What could be improved: The only thing that could be better is the location, thinking of the whole city.Lovely. … – Rufaro from Zimbabwe – June 18, 2025 (9/10)
It was a lovely stay. My mum called it home away from home. It is just that. Nice and cozy, and homey.
