Beautiful Home in Houghton Overview

You know what caught me off guard about Beautiful Home in Houghton? The name actually undersells it. I mean, yeah, it’s beautiful – but it’s also got this wonderfully lived-in feeling that makes you forget you’re staying in what’s technically a three-star place. When I first pulled up to 5th Avenue, I honestly wasn’t sure I was in the right spot because the whole street has this quiet residential vibe that feels worlds away from the typical hotel strip.

Houghton itself is one of those Johannesburg neighborhoods that locals rave about but tourists somehow miss – which actually works in your favor because you get all the perks without the crowds. The area’s got this leafy, almost suburban feel, but you’re still close enough to the city center that nothing feels like a trek. I loved the morning walks around the neighborhood; there’s something about the way the light filters through those jacaranda trees that just hits different. The property sits nicely among other well-maintained homes, so you get a real sense of how Johannesburg locals actually live rather than being stuck in some generic hotel bubble.

What really won me over was the attention to detail – not the fancy amenities kind of detail, but the thoughtful touches that show someone actually cares about your experience. The rooms have this comfortable, uncluttered feel, and honestly, the beds are way better than you’d expect. I’m usually pretty picky about pillows, but I slept like a rock every night. The common areas have that perfect balance where you can hang out and chat with other guests if you’re in the mood, or just find a quiet corner with a book. Parking was never an issue, which anyone who’s driven around Joburg will tell you is basically a miracle. The staff genuinely seems to enjoy what they’re doing – not in that overly polished hospitality way, but more like they’re actually happy to help figure out your day. They pointed me toward this incredible local coffee spot that I never would’ve found on my own, and gave me the real scoop on which routes to avoid during rush hour. It’s the kind of place where you end up extending your stay just because you’re comfortable, and honestly, considering the value you get here, there are worse problems to have.

Reviews of Beautiful Home in Houghton

  • Hostess was very pleasant to deal with and available at all times of day to help with any queries. – Sarika from South Africa – September 1, 2025 (7/10)

The staff was very pleasant, friendly, and helpful, and the property's labelling was very helpful. The house was clean and neat. Board games, chocolate on pillows, wine, goodies, and the pets' water bowl provided were a bonus with a personal touch. The hostess was lovely to deal with.

What could be improved: The two bathrooms were a bit tiny, and the hot water did not last long. The outdoor and garden cleanliness could do with improvement. There were a lot of ins and outs of members living on the property, which was a little distracting and noisy.

  • Good – Attiya from South Africa – January 28, 2025 (7/10)

    Location

What could be improved: Other people living on the property are extremely noisy

  • It was a really nice stay, with warm and generous host and helpers; worked really well for us. – Charlotte from United Kingdom – January 15, 2025 (9/10)

The kitchenette has a mini fridge with a carton of fresh milk, an electric kettle, and included instant coffee, tea, sugar, and biscuits. The Wifi worked except for a spell one day when there was a power cut, and then it worked intermittently. There was parking inside the property. A wonderfully friendly couple carried our bags upstairs to the first floor apartment, and then down again for our car. The shower has hot and cold water. Enough towels and bed linens, hand towel and toiletries were provided. When we requested bedside lamps, Geeta provided them the same day. When requested, Geeta gave a Wi-Fi password for laptop. (QR code posted inside for getting We-Fi with smart phone). We could store some food in the fridge and sometimes ordered UBER EATS for breakfast, which worked fine.

What could be improved: A Wi-Fi password posted inside would have been helpful; Not being very techy, we needed to get help from a neighbour to get Wi-Fi via a QR code. The water from the kitchen tap needed to be filtered; it ran a bit brown. (We fortunately brought one with us; it would be super to have one provided). Lights at the far end of the room when you come in at night, so slightly awkward. Shower runs either hot or cold water, but nothing in between. (Okay for me; getting clean while the hot comes through, then rinse in cold). Lights all LED, hard on the eyes at night. It would be ideal if mosquito screens could go up on the windows and doors. Closing the curtains at night with lights out, kept most of them out, but there's need for open windows for fresh air in the summer, and a few mosquitos made it in to bite us at night. Not many, but enough to call for scratching during the days.

  • Wonderful – Hally from South Africa – January 15, 2025 (9/10)

Clean, comfortable, convenient. And a wonderful receptive responsive and accommodating host.

  • Thank you providing a comfortable space for us during our stay. Overall a great place. – Faiza from South Africa – December 17, 2024 (9/10)

The accommodation was well-equipped with ample supplies and had everything we needed. The location was fantastic, creating a cozy and relaxed atmosphere that truly felt like home.

What could be improved: While I understand the importance of being considerate of other guests' comfort and privacy, We found it a bit challenging that we as a group of friends couldn't be a little louder during the day also, we were told to keep music down by other guests. We respected the rules and regulations in place to ensure a pleasant experience for all guests, but it would have been nice to have a bit more flexibility in this regard.

  • Pet friendly, spacious and comfortable room with en-suite bathroom and microwave facilities – Jacqueline from South Africa – October 26, 2024 (7/10)

The room was spacious and it felt safe. Communication with Geeta was prompt and effective. Adam and Naomi met me with the keys and kindly helped me carry my luggage up the stairs. Geeta popped in to say hello on the morning after we arrived and our fur babies had a short play date with her little ones. Our dogs loved exploring the massive garden and I got in some steps too. The coffee, tea, milk and biscuits provided and the chocolates on our bed were a thoughtful touch.

What could be improved: The kitchen only really caters for microwave meals or the like. It has a microwave, fridge, sink plus crockery and cutlery. Some way of cooking a meal, like a small air fryer, as well as a bowl or two for making a salad or cooking something in the microwave, would have made a big difference for us. A bedside lamp and a small fan would also have been nice. Other than that, I have no complaints.

  • We felt cared for. It was very relaxing. A good escape. – Marna from South Africa – August 28, 2023 (9/10)

The property is stunning and spacious and we really had an awesome stay. The outside sitting area was nice and private and we were able to enjoy our meals and coffee on the terrace. The host also put out some snacks and rusks, accompanied with coffee, tea, sugar and milk, which was very unexpected and truly special. We also got a chocolate bar each in our rooms. These small touches, makes you very cared for when coming to stay here.

What could be improved: The inverter didn't work and the gas stove ran out of gas. Luckily they do have an electrical stove as well, so we were able to just move over when the power came back. You really don't need the inverter or the gas, there is braai facilities and electrical equipment that you can use, they are just nice to have's, so it did not hinder our stay at all.
