Sometimes the best discoveries are the ones hiding in plain sight. The lodge has this understated elegance that immediately puts you at ease — it’s not trying too hard to impress, which actually makes it more impressive, if that makes sense.

Location & Neighborhood

Rivonia is one of those Johannesburg neighborhoods that locals love but tourists often overlook, and that’s exactly what makes staying here so special. You’re close enough to Sandton’s business district that you won’t spend your life in traffic, but far enough away to feel like you’re experiencing the real Jo’burg. The couples who frequent this place have figured out something important — River Road gives you easy access to some fantastic restaurants and galleries without the tourist crowds. I mean, you can actually walk around here and feel safe, which isn’t something you can say about every part of the city.

The Room Experience

My room was spacious in that effortless way that makes you wonder why other hotels cram everything together. The décor strikes this perfect balance between contemporary and comfortable — think clean lines but with enough personality that you don’t feel like you’re sleeping in a showroom. What really impressed me was the attention to detail: proper blackout curtains (essential for jet lag recovery), a desk that’s actually usable, and a bathroom that doesn’t require contortionist skills to navigate. The beds are seriously comfortable too, which matters more than people realize when you’re dealing with long travel days.
