I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Casa Sol Mar – Chic 2BR Retreat – Relax, Unwind & Feel at Home on 8th Street, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a four-star place in Houghton. But you know what? This little gem completely won me over from the moment I walked through the door.

The thing about Johannesburg is that Houghton sits in this sweet spot where you’re close enough to the city center but tucked away from all the chaos – and Casa Sol Mar really captures that vibe perfectly. The space feels like someone’s stylish friend just handed you the keys to their place for the weekend. I mean, the two bedrooms are actually spacious (not those cramped hotel boxes you sometimes get), and there’s this lovely natural light that streams in during the morning hours. The kitchen is properly equipped too, which honestly saved me a fortune since I could make my own coffee instead of hunting down decent spots every morning. Though if you do venture out, there’s a fantastic little café about three blocks down that the owner mentioned – totally worth the walk.

What really struck me was how quiet it gets at night, even though you’re still very much in the city. I was expecting traffic noise or the usual urban soundtrack, but the street is surprisingly peaceful after about 9 PM. The décor has this relaxed, contemporary feel without being too trendy or trying too hard – think clean lines and warm colors that actually make you want to settle in and stay awhile. Parking was straightforward too, which anyone who’s driven around Joburg will tell you is no small thing. The check-in process was smooth, and the host clearly knows the area well – they gave me some solid recommendations for restaurants nearby that weren’t just the obvious tourist spots. Actually, that 9.5 rating makes total sense once you spend a night there. It’s one of those places where all the little details just work together nicely, from the comfortable beds to the reliable WiFi to the fact that the shower actually has proper water pressure. If you’re looking for a place in Johannesburg where you can properly unwind without feeling like you’re staying in some corporate hotel chain, this is definitely worth considering.

  What could be improved: There were no instructions on how to get rid of the bin trash. This has to be included in the booklet. We found one shower blocked. We had to find a way to unblock it. Otherwise, everything was perfect.
