I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Charlie’s Spot – The Gardens on Nursery Road, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The name had me picturing some backpacker crash pad, but this three-star gem actually surprised me in the best way possible. It’s tucked into this quiet residential stretch that feels worlds away from the chaos of central Johannesburg, yet you’re still close enough to everything that matters.

What really won me over was how the place actually lives up to its “Gardens” part of the name. The property sits in this lovely green pocket where you can hear birds in the morning instead of traffic – which, trust me, is not something you take for granted in Joburg. The rooms have this comfortable, lived-in feeling that’s way more appealing than those sterile chain hotels. Mine overlooked the garden area, and I’d catch myself just watching the light filter through the trees while having my morning coffee. The staff genuinely seemed to care about making sure I was sorted, not just going through the motions. Parking was easy too, which anyone who’s driven around Johannesburg will tell you is half the battle.

You know what I appreciated most? The location gives you this perfect balance – you’re in a safe, quiet neighborhood but still within reasonable distance of the Rosebank area and all those shopping centers. I could walk to grab decent coffee or a proper meal without feeling like I needed to plan an expedition. The rooms are clean and comfortable enough, though don’t expect luxury at this price point. Sometimes the wifi got a bit sketchy in the evenings when everyone was online, but honestly, that forced me to actually relax for once. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re staying somewhere real rather than some anonymous hotel bubble, and after dealing with Johannesburg’s intensity all day, that’s exactly what you need.

  Martha and Thandi are absolutely amazing hosts. The area is clean and really peaceful.
  
  What could be improved: No shower caps were provided so this was a disadvantage. The lights used in the bathroom and bedroom were really blinding and aren't good for the eyes however everything else was good.

  What could be improved: In the Middle of the Night somebody came to knock on our door and the knock was too loud ,and we were very tired we needed to rest then boom that terrible knock which kept us awake for another 2 hours 😴
