City Lodge Hotel Bryanston Overview

I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to City Lodge Hotel Bryanston on that corner of Main Road and Peter Place, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like a pretty standard business hotel. But you know what? Sometimes those unassuming places end up surprising you, and this three-star spot definitely grew on me during my stay.

The thing about Bryanston West is that it’s one of those areas in Johannesburg where you’re close enough to Sandton’s business district to make sense for work trips, but far enough out that you’re not dealing with the absolute chaos of the city center. I mean, you can actually find parking here without wanting to pull your hair out – which, if you’ve driven in Joburg, you know is basically a miracle. The hotel sits in this quiet residential-ish area where you’ll hear the occasional car go by, but it’s not like staying next to the M1 highway or anything.

What really won me over was how the staff seemed to actually care about making your stay work. The front desk folks remember your name after the first day (I’m terrible with names myself, so I appreciate when others aren’t), and they’ve got this genuine helpfulness that doesn’t feel scripted. The rooms are clean and functional – nothing fancy, but the beds are comfortable and the air conditioning works properly, which honestly covers about 80% of what I need from a hotel room. The bathrooms are a decent size too, though the shower pressure could be stronger if I’m being picky.

Here’s something I noticed that frequent business travelers will appreciate – the Wi-Fi is actually reliable throughout the building. I spent a fair bit of time working from the lobby area, and I never had those annoying drop-outs that make you want to throw your laptop across the room. There’s also this little business center setup that’s nothing glamorous, but it has what you need if you’ve got to print boarding passes or send a quick fax (yes, apparently people still do that).

The breakfast situation is pretty solid for what you’re paying – it’s not going to blow your mind, but there’s enough variety to keep you happy for a few days, and the coffee is actually drinkable. I’ve stayed at places twice the price where the coffee tastes like it was made with water from the Vaal River, so that’s saying something.

Location-wise, you’re about a ten-minute drive to Sandton City if you need some serious shopping therapy, and getting to OR Tambo isn’t too painful – maybe 45 minutes depending on traffic, which for Johannesburg standards is pretty reasonable. The neighborhood has a few decent restaurants within walking distance, though I’d recommend asking the front desk for current recommendations since places seem to come and go pretty regularly around there.

Look, this isn’t the kind of place you’re going to write home about or post Instagram stories from every corner. But sometimes you just need a reliable, comfortable base that doesn’t break the bank, and City Lodge Bryanston delivers on that front. It’s the kind of hotel that does the basics really well, and honestly, that’s exactly what I was looking for.

The hotel is lovely – great facilities, very nice breakfast, good food for dinner, very comfortable bed, lovely bathroom products, great shower but above all fantastic staff

What could be improved: Only reason an 8 is there is no plug next to the bed so charging a phone is a pain and one night we came back very late – the security guard must have been sleeping and there was no answer from the phone at the hotel so we struggled to get through the security gates to get back in. They did apologise when security eventually emerged after almost 10 minutes

  • Very Good – Robert from Tanzania – January 20, 2025 (8/10)
