The thing about this area is that you’re sort of tucked away from the main city chaos, but still close enough to everything that matters. I mean, Eastgate Shopping Centre is literally a stone’s throw away – and I’m talking about the kind of walking distance where you don’t even think twice about popping over for dinner or groceries. The staff at check-in were genuinely friendly (not that rehearsed hotel politeness), and the lobby has this clean, modern feel without trying too hard. My room was exactly what you’d expect from City Lodge – simple, spotless, with a bed that’s actually comfortable and air conditioning that works properly. The bathroom was compact but well-designed, and honestly, the water pressure was better than some fancier places I’ve stayed.

What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night, despite being on a fairly busy road. The windows do their job well, and you’re not dealing with the street noise that can plague hotels in more central Joburg locations. Parking was easy and secure – which, let’s face it, is not something you take for granted around here. The breakfast wasn’t fancy, but it was fresh and filling, with enough variety to keep you happy whether you’re heading out for business meetings or exploring the city. I actually found myself chatting with other guests over coffee, which tells you something about the relaxed atmosphere. The Wi-Fi worked consistently throughout the building, the housekeeping was thorough, and there’s something refreshing about a place that delivers exactly what it promises without any pretense. If you’re looking for a solid, dependable base in this part of Johannesburg – especially if you’ve got business in the eastern suburbs or want easy access to shopping and restaurants without the premium prices of city center hotels – this place hits the sweet spot between comfort and value.

  What could be improved: I have a room preference, not on the ground floor, this is where I was put. There was a brocken door that took city lodge 3 days to fix not to mention ants on the level I was given

  The whole setting of the hotel, makes you feel very welcome and relaxed. I like the set out of the rooms and the view you see from the windows.
  
  What could be improved: The instinct of the hotel staff is not to be helpful, in fact very cold and uninterested at times especially the gladies at the Reception, otherwise it was good value for money. There were also mosquitoes in the room.
