You know what really surprised me about City Nest: Heart of Linksfield II? I honestly wasn’t expecting much from a place tucked away on Edward Avenue – I mean, it’s not exactly where you’d think to look for a gem. But this four-star spot completely changed my perspective on staying outside the obvious tourist zones in Johannesburg.

The first thing that hits you is how quiet it actually is here. Linksfield has this residential feel that’s sort of rare to find so close to the city center, and the owners have really leaned into that vibe. The rooms have this warm, lived-in quality – not sterile like some of the big chain hotels downtown. I stayed on the second floor and could hear birds in the morning instead of traffic, which honestly felt like a small miracle in Joburg. The beds are properly comfortable too, and they’ve got these thick curtains that actually block out light if you need to sleep in. Small detail, but you’d be amazed how many places mess that up.

What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to genuinely know the area – they pointed me toward this little coffee shop about ten minutes’ walk away that I never would have found otherwise, and gave me the real scoop on which streets to avoid after dark (practical stuff that matters). The breakfast spread was solid without being fancy – fresh fruit, decent coffee, and they actually asked if I had dietary restrictions instead of just assuming. Parking was straightforward, which if you’ve ever tried to park anywhere central in Johannesburg, you’ll know that’s worth its weight in gold. The whole setup feels like someone’s put thought into the details that actually matter when you’re traveling – good wifi that doesn’t cut out every five minutes, proper water pressure in the shower, and staff who answer questions without making you feel like you’re bothering them. It’s getting a 9.5 rating from guests for good reason, and honestly, I can see why people come back here instead of rolling the dice on somewhere new.

  Very good host, communication was excellent and apartment was extremely clean and well stocked. For me the location was perfect.

  The location was perfect for us – close to family & friends, and local shops/restaurants/etc.
  Secure and neatly decorated
  
  What could be improved: Only 1 side table for master bed meant some inconvenience when 2 sleepers.
  Security – Every entry and departure required interaction with security guards. A key fob, or being able to enter a code on a keypad would have been more convenient.
  We fumbled with the blinds when trying to close (perhaps it was just us not knowing how to use this properly).
  Although a fan is provided, an air-con unit would have been ideal during hot summer nights.
