I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Claires of Sandton Luxury Guest House on 8th Street in Parkmore, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. The address had me a bit confused (you know how Sandton addresses can be), but once you find it, you realize it’s actually perfectly positioned in this quiet residential pocket that feels worlds away from the hustle of the main business district.

What struck me immediately was how Claire – yes, there’s an actual Claire who runs this place – has managed to create something that feels like staying at a sophisticated friend’s house rather than a typical guesthouse. The whole vibe is four-star luxury without any of that stuffy hotel formality that can make you feel like you’re tiptoeing around. I mean, there are only a handful of rooms, so you get this really personal attention that larger places just can’t match. Claire actually remembers your name and how you like your coffee, which honestly made my mornings so much better. The breakfast spread is something else too – proper South African touches mixed with international options, and everything’s clearly made with care, not just thrown together.

The location is what really sells it for me though. Parkmore is one of those areas that locals know but tourists often miss – it’s residential enough that you can actually sleep at night (no traffic noise like you’d get closer to Nelson Mandela Square), but you’re still just a few minutes’ drive from all the Sandton action. I walked to a couple of nearby restaurants for dinner, and there’s decent parking if you’ve got a rental car, which you’ll probably need anyway if you’re doing business in the area. The rooms themselves are spacious and well-appointed – I particularly loved the attention to lighting, which sounds like a weird thing to notice, but you know how some places have those harsh overhead lights that make everything feel clinical? Not here. Everything feels warm and lived-in, but still polished. The Wi-Fi actually works properly too, which I can’t say about every place I’ve stayed in Joburg. If I had one small gripe, it’s that the hot water takes a minute or two to get going in the mornings, but that’s pretty standard for older buildings in the area, and once it’s hot, it stays hot. You’re really paying for the personal service and the peaceful atmosphere here – it’s the kind of place where you can decompress after dealing with Johannesburg traffic all day.
