I’ll be honest, when I first walked into Contemporary unit in the Heart of the Sandton city, I wasn’t expecting much from a three-star place in what’s essentially Johannesburg’s financial district. But you know what? This little apartment-style setup actually surprised me in the best way possible.

The location is pretty much unbeatable if you’re doing business in Sandton or just want to be where things are happening. You’re literally a five-minute walk from Sandton City Shopping Centre – and I mean literally, I timed it because I’m weird like that. The Gautrain station is close enough that you can hear the trains if you’re on the balcony, but honestly, it’s not bothersome at all. What I really loved is how you can walk to places like Nelson Mandela Square for dinner without dealing with Johannesburg traffic, which, let’s face it, can be absolutely brutal during rush hour.

The unit itself feels more like staying in a friend’s modern apartment than a typical hotel room. The kitchen is actually functional – I mean, you could cook a proper meal if you wanted to, not just heat up leftovers in a sad little microwave. The living area has this clean, minimalist vibe that some people might find a bit sterile, but I found it refreshingly uncluttered after dealing with the chaos of the city all day. The Wi-Fi is solid (I was working remotely part of my stay), and there’s decent natural light coming through the windows. One small thing though – the walls aren’t super thick, so if you’re sensitive to noise, you might hear your neighbors occasionally. Nothing terrible, just the usual apartment-living sounds.

What really sold me on this place was how it bridges that gap between the sterility of a business hotel and the chaos of staying somewhere completely local. You’ve got the security and convenience of being in the heart of Sandton’s business district, but you’re not paying those insane Sandton hotel prices. The staff – well, there isn’t really traditional hotel staff, but the property manager I dealt with was responsive and actually helpful when I needed extra towels. Parking is available but costs extra, which is pretty standard for this area anyway. I ended up using Uber most of the time since everything’s so close. If you’re here during the week, expect the area to be buzzing with business travelers and office workers, but weekends get surprisingly quiet – almost eerily so, actually. It’s like the whole district just exhales and takes a break.

  I was happy with the apartment and it was exactly as the pictures! The view of Sandton was absolutely amazing from the windows. I was disappointed though as the stove in our unit didn’t work and this was a great inconvenience as we had to move to another apartment that wasn’t as nice as what we had initially booked. The facilitating of the cleaning of the unit each day could be improved.
