You know what struck me first about Courtyard Hotel Rosebank? It’s actually got this understated confidence that I wasn’t expecting. I mean, when you pull up to the corner of Oxford Road and Tyrwhitt Avenue, you’re not dealing with some flashy glass tower – it’s more like a well-dressed business traveler who knows exactly what they’re doing without making a fuss about it.

The whole Rosebank area has this energy that’s hard to pin down – it’s got that financial district buzz during the day, but honestly, the hotel sits just far enough back from the Oxford Road chaos that you’re not dealing with constant traffic noise. What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to actually know Johannesburg beyond the tourist script. The front desk guy didn’t just tell me about the Gautrain station being walkable (which it is, maybe eight minutes if you don’t mind the slight uphill), but he also mentioned which carriage to get on for the best air conditioning – that’s the kind of local intel that matters when it’s 30 degrees outside.

The four-star rating feels spot-on here. They’re not trying to be the fanciest place in town, but everything works the way it should. The rooms have this clean, business-appropriate vibe without being sterile, and I’ll tell you what – the Wi-Fi actually delivers on its promises, which is more than I can say for some five-star places I’ve stayed at. The bathroom setup is pretty clever too, with enough counter space that you’re not playing Tetris with your toiletries. What really sold me though was the view situation – if you end up on the higher floors facing north, you get these glimpses of the city that remind you why Johannesburg has this weird magnetic pull despite all its contradictions.

Parking was surprisingly painless (secure underground, which matters here), and the restaurant downstairs does this breakfast spread that’s actually thought out rather than just thrown together. I found myself hanging around the lobby area more than usual – there’s something about the setup that makes it feel like a place where things happen rather than just where people sleep between flights. The location puts you walking distance from the Rosebank Mall if you need to grab essentials, and honestly, being able to hop on the Gautrain so easily makes getting to OR Tambo or Sandton dead simple. It’s one of those hotels that gets the basics so right that you don’t spend your time thinking about what’s missing – you just get on with whatever brought you to Joburg in the first place.

  We had a spacious room on the ground floor facing a courtyard with a garden. We had a kitchenette and a table, aside from a desk. Breakfast was served in a separate room facing the bigger courtyard garden. The hotel had a home-like atmosphere and was very comfortable. Wifi was great!
  
  What could be improved: The airconditioners were a bit temperamental and difficult to control with the remote. The rooms were comfortable but could do with a bit more maintenance (soap holder was missing, etc.)
