Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Courtyard Hotel Sandton on Rivonia Road, I wasn’t expecting much. It’s tucked into this sort of quiet stretch in Sandown, and from the street it looks nice enough but pretty understated. But you know what? Sometimes that’s exactly what you want when you’re dealing with the chaos of Johannesburg.

The thing about this four-star place is that it gets the basics really, really right. I mean, the lobby has this warm, contemporary feel – lots of wood and neutral tones that actually feel sophisticated rather than trying too hard. Check-in was smooth (thank god, because I’d been stuck in traffic for an hour getting there), and the staff genuinely seemed to care about making sure I knew my way around. The rooms are what I’d call thoughtfully designed – not huge, but every inch is used well. The bed was fantastic, which matters more than people realize when you’re adjusting to the time difference. And honestly, the shower pressure was excellent, something you can never take for granted.

What really won me over, though, was how well-positioned this place is for actually getting things done in Sandton. You’re basically a stone’s throw from the Gautrain station, which is clutch if you need to get to OR Tambo without dealing with highway traffic. The Sandton City shopping center is close enough to walk to when the weather’s decent – maybe ten minutes if you don’t mind a little stroll. I actually ended up eating dinner there a couple of times because the hotel’s restaurant, while perfectly fine, gets a bit repetitive if you’re staying more than a few days. The area around the hotel feels safe to walk around during the day, and there’s decent security at night, though like anywhere in Joburg, you want to use common sense after dark. Parking was never an issue, which is more of a relief than it should be. The business center actually has reliable internet and printing (I know, revolutionary), and the small gym is well-maintained even if it’s not going to win any awards. I appreciated that the pool area was quiet – seems like mostly business travelers stay here, so it’s not overrun with kids splashing around at all hours.

  The place is well located near Sandton. It is within a complex with a large balcony, so you don’t feel like you’re restricted to a room in a hotel. The breakfast was amazing and the staff are super friendly.

  Whenever we are in Sandton we always stay there. It’s comfortable and you feel at home. Staff is friendly. When having a visitor if you are short of tea or sugar they provide it.

  The Breakfast was very good at an extra charge of ZAR 195.00 per person additional to the room charge ( i was travelling solo but didn't have the option of a reduced charge) The room sleeps two. The breakfast lounge was quiet and comfortable – staff and Chef an absolute pleasure

  Arrived at 4pm to dress up and leave at 5.30pm to a restuarant very close by. Got back at 2am and checked out at 10.30 am after breakfast – would have loved to stay longer to relax.

  Located in Sandton, near the railway station but the hotel can organize a very efficient taxi from the airport. Everyone very friendly and helpful and I had an excellent breakfast on the Sunday I checked out.

  The location is convenient for me as it is near the workshop venue. Easy to locate. 10 minutes walking distance from Mandela square. There are shops and supermarkets in front of the hotel.
