I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Coz Guesthouse in Randburg on Republic Road, I wasn’t expecting much. The name sounds pretty casual, you know? But stepping inside completely changed my perspective on what a four-star guesthouse could be.

The thing about Randburg is that it’s one of those Johannesburg suburbs that feels residential but isn’t boring – there’s this energy bubbling just under the surface. Republic Road itself is actually pretty quiet, which I appreciated after dealing with the chaos of Jo’burg traffic all day. What struck me immediately was how the owners have managed to create this perfect middle ground between homey and polished. The common areas have this lived-in elegance – you know what I mean? Like someone’s stylish aunt decorated the place, not some corporate design team. There’s artwork on the walls that actually means something, and the furniture looks like it was chosen because someone loved it, not because it photographed well.

The rooms are where this place really shines, though. Mine had this gorgeous natural light pouring in through oversized windows, and honestly, the bed was one of those you sink into and immediately think “okay, I could live here.” The attention to detail is what gets you – proper reading lights, outlets where you actually need them, and a shower with water pressure that doesn’t make you want to cry. I mean, these sound like basic things, but you’d be surprised how many places get them wrong. The WiFi actually works throughout the property too, which saved me during a work emergency. There’s something about the whole setup that makes you feel like a welcome houseguest rather than just another booking number.

What really won me over was the breakfast situation – and I’m usually pretty skeptical of guesthouse breakfasts. They serve it in this sun-drenched dining area that opens onto a small garden, and everything feels fresh and intentional. The staff genuinely seems to care about whether you’re enjoying yourself, which is refreshing. They gave me solid recommendations for dinner spots nearby that weren’t just the obvious tourist traps. Plus, parking is right there and secure, which anyone who’s spent time in Johannesburg will tell you is worth its weight in gold. The whole experience felt authentic in a way that’s getting harder to find – like staying with friends who happen to run an impeccable guesthouse rather than checking into another anonymous hotel room.

  The apartment is homey and cozy. The hosts are very attentive and friendly. I felt safe and comfortable. The facilities are great and there's also a gym.

  It was very safe, quiet and spacious for 2 people.
  The hosts made our stay amazing. They went the extra mile to assist us when we forgot our phone in the uber.
  Someone came to clean and change our bed sheets during our stay. We also had access to a gym and a garden. We could not have asked for more.

  Location was perfect. It was affordable and ideal for anyone needing a short stopover in Randburg for business or to visit family. Wi-Fi was excellent with a full suite of Netflix and DSTV to keep my daughters amused when they came to visit. Owner Freddy is very accommodating and helpful.
  
  What could be improved: The kitchen facilities need to be better organised so that things you need can easily be found.
