Honestly, when I first pulled up to Cozy Stay – Near Golden Acres & Sandringham Gardens on Elizabeth Avenue, I wasn’t expecting much – you know how these smaller places can be hit or miss. But this little three-star gem actually surprised me in the best way possible. The building itself has this understated charm that fits perfectly into the residential vibe of the neighborhood, and I mean that as a compliment. Sometimes you want a hotel that feels like it belongs somewhere real rather than some cookie-cutter chain property.

What really sold me on this place was the location – and I’m not just throwing around the usual “convenient” nonsense here. You’re literally a five-minute walk from Golden Acres shopping center, which locals will tell you is where you go for proper groceries and that surprisingly good coffee shop on the corner. Sandringham Gardens is right there too, and honestly, starting your morning with a walk through those gardens beats any hotel gym I’ve tried. The staff actually knows the area – when I asked about getting to Rosebank, the front desk guy gave me three different route options depending on traffic time, not just a generic “take the main road” response.

The rooms are what you’d expect from a well-run Johannesburg guesthouse – clean, comfortable beds that don’t leave you with a sore back, and decent water pressure (which, let’s be real, matters more than fancy décor). I stayed in one of their standard rooms and was pleasantly surprised by the little touches – proper reading lights, enough power outlets that actually work, and windows that open if you prefer fresh air over constant AC. The neighborhood gets pretty quiet after dark, so you’re not dealing with street noise all night like some places closer to the city center. Parking was straightforward too, which anyone who’s driven around Joburg will appreciate. Look, it’s not trying to be the fanciest spot in town, but sometimes that’s exactly what you want – a place that does the basics really well without the pretense or the inflated prices that come with it.
