I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Craftsmanship Loft 344 on Marshall Street, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. The name had me picturing some hipster warehouse conversion, but this four-star spot actually surprised me in the best way. It’s tucked into this interesting part of Johannesburg where you’ve got these beautifully restored buildings sitting alongside newer developments, and the hotel really captures that whole urban renewal vibe without feeling pretentious about it.

What really got me was the attention to detail – I mean, you can tell someone actually thought about how people live in these spaces. The loft-style rooms have these gorgeous high ceilings and exposed brick that feels authentic (not that fake industrial look some places go for), and honestly, the lighting is just perfect. You know how some hotels have either blazing overhead lights or romantic-but-useless dim bulbs? This place actually nails it with these carefully placed fixtures that make everything feel warm but still functional. The neighborhood itself has this great energy – Marshall Street has really come alive in recent years, and you’re walking distance to some fantastic local spots that most tourists never discover. I spent a morning just wandering around and ended up having the best coffee at this little place two blocks over.

The service feels genuinely personal without being overly fussy, which I really appreciate. Check-in was smooth, parking was straightforward (always a concern in this part of the city), and the staff seemed to actually know the area well enough to give solid recommendations. I mean, sure, it’s not going to blow you away with over-the-top luxury – the 7.8 rating feels pretty spot-on – but there’s something refreshing about a place that focuses on getting the fundamentals right rather than trying to dazzle you with unnecessary bells and whistles. The rooms are well-designed for actual living, not just Instagram photos, and you can tell they’ve thought about things like where to put your suitcase and how to make the workspace actually usable. If you’re looking for that authentic Johannesburg experience without sacrificing comfort, this place hits that sweet spot perfectly.

  The place as a whole was awesome, deco, clean bedding. Balcony.
  
  What could be improved: Going an extra mile is always exceptional, I love my cup of coffee in the morning, I was quite disappointed to find the coffee set empty, otherwise why is it there😅. Maybe not everyone loves Tea,but it really would have helped me get the day started on a good note. Otherwise everything else was on point.
