I’ll admit, when I first walked up to the building, I wasn’t sure what to expect – the area’s got this interesting mix of old industrial vibes and new creative energy that can feel a bit rough around the edges if you don’t know what you’re looking at.

But here’s the thing about Maboneng that locals will tell you: it’s where the city’s creative pulse really beats. You’ve got Arts on Main just around the corner, weekend markets that actually feel authentic rather than touristy, and some seriously good coffee shops within walking distance. The hostel itself feels like it was designed by people who’ve actually stayed in hostels before – the common areas aren’t cramped afterthoughts, the kitchen‘s got proper counter space (trust me, this matters when you’re trying to cook with five other people), and they’ve managed to strike that balance between social and not-too-chaotic. I mean, you can have a conversation without shouting, which is rarer than it should be in places like this.

What really impressed me was how they handle the practical stuff that budget travelers care about but rarely get addressed properly. The Wi-Fi actually works throughout the building – not just in the lobby like so many places. Security feels solid without being paranoid; there’s proper lockers and the front desk staff seem to know what’s going on in the neighborhood day to day. Honestly, staying here gave me confidence to explore areas of Joburg I might have been hesitant about otherwise, partly because the staff were genuinely helpful with directions and timing advice (like when to head back before things get too quiet in the evening). The whole Maboneng area transforms pretty dramatically between day and night, and having that local insight made a real difference. Look, it’s not luxury – it’s a backpackers’ place and feels like one – but it’s the kind of spot where you end up staying longer than planned because it just works. Plus, you’re literally in the middle of one of the most interesting urban renewal stories happening in South Africa right now, which beats being stuck in some sterile hotel district every time.

  The bar area was a nice space to hang out in, even if you were not drinking. They also had a nice balcony to sit on overlooking the street. The entire staff was very hospitable. .

  Cool looking property and nice outdoor balcony. Good kitchen for cooking. Activities board of what to do in town. Big private clean rooms. We were shown around the hostel which was nice.
  
  What could be improved: Check in process didn’t feel smooth, we were told to fill out a sheet with no pen and scan a QR score. We had just arrived so didn’t have wifi so couldn’t proceed with anything. The welcome didn’t feel warm and the lady kept talking to other people while we were trying to check in. Seems like a lot of locals come to have drinks which is great but they can be extremely loud so having that controlled better would be good as they were shouting outside and music really loud for both of our nights.

  Great location with some excellent tours on offer. I was warned about potential noise from the street but actually I was never disturbed.
  
  What could be improved: I would recommend removing the handle on the sliding door in the bathroom, it is at the most awkward position to get past the sink and seems unnecessary. Note too that the stairs up to the single, private room are very steep and narrow.

  This place is superb. The staff and community are brilliant, and it’s a safe and welcoming place. The surrounding area not so much, so do be careful if walking around.
