I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Dunton Guest House on that quiet stretch of Dunton Road, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Rivonia isn’t exactly the part of Johannesburg that screams “tourist destination,” but you know what? That’s exactly what makes this place special. It sits in this lovely residential pocket where you actually hear birds in the morning instead of traffic, which is honestly pretty rare for Jo’burg.

The moment you step inside, you realize this four-star spot gets all the little things right. The owner – and I’m pretty sure it’s family-run because everyone knows everyone’s name – clearly put thought into every corner. The rooms have this warm, lived-in elegance that feels more like staying at a well-traveled friend’s place than some sterile hotel. I mean, there are actual books on the shelves that look like they’ve been read, not just placed there for decoration. The beds are seriously comfortable too, which matters more than people think when you’re dealing with jet lag or long days exploring the city.

What really won me over though was how genuinely helpful everyone was without being pushy about it. They know the area inside and out – like, they’ll tell you which entrance to use at Sandton City to avoid the crowds, or that the little Portuguese place around the corner does the best prawns in the area (and they’re right). Parking is never an issue, which if you’ve driven around Sandton, you’ll appreciate. The breakfast is proper too – none of that sad continental stuff, but actual eggs made how you want them and really good coffee. I stayed there twice now, once during the crazy December rush and once in the middle of winter, and honestly the service was consistently excellent both times. It’s the kind of place where you feel like a regular even on your first visit, and the 9.6 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there.
