Ekuphumuleni Village Overview
I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Ekuphululeni Village on Gous Street, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The name alone intrigued me (it means “place of rest” in Zulu, which I learned from chatting with the front desk), and honestly, it delivers on that promise in ways I didn’t anticipate. This three-star spot sits in a quieter part of Johannesburg, away from the tourist crowds but still close enough that you’re not stranded – I mean, you can get to the main areas without too much hassle, though I’d recommend having a car or being comfortable with ride-sharing apps.
What struck me most was how this place actually feels like a village within the city. The layout isn’t your typical hotel corridor situation – instead, you’ve got these separate accommodation units that give you genuine privacy and space to breathe. I stayed in one of their self-catering units, and you know what? The kitchen was properly equipped, not just some sad mini-fridge and microwave combo. I actually cooked dinner a couple nights, picked up ingredients from a nearby shop, and it felt surprisingly homey. The gardens connecting everything are well-maintained without being overly manicured – there’s something refreshing about a place that doesn’t try too hard to impress. Parking was never an issue, which anyone who’s spent time in Joburg will appreciate, and the whole property felt secure without being fortress-like.
The service here really surprised me – it’s attentive without being intrusive, if that makes sense. The staff genuinely seemed to care about making sure I was comfortable, offering local recommendations that weren’t just the obvious tourist spots. One evening, I was sitting outside my unit and could hear families laughing from nearby accommodations, kids playing in the distance – it reminded me that this place attracts people looking for something more authentic than your standard business hotel experience. Sure, it’s not luxury in the marble-lobby sense, but the comfort level is solid and the value is exceptional. I’d definitely come back, especially for longer stays when you want to feel settled rather than just passing through. It’s one of those places that grows on you – unpretentious, genuinely welcoming, and surprisingly peaceful for being in the heart of South Africa’s largest city.

What could be improved: "Only two toilet paper rolls were provided for a nine-day stay. There was a water outage in the area something I know has happened before and I was given a 20litre bucket of water smelling paint and a mop bucket with hot water to bathe with, the following day had to wake up 30min early to make hot water.Perhaps installing a few water tanks could help and at least provide vaskom
Additionally, my partner accidentally took the key to Pretoria, and I had to sleep with an unlocked door as a woman alone, as they refused to lend me the spare key for just one night. To make matters worse, the shower gave me an electric shock everyday.
