I mean, when you’re driving up Grayston Drive – which honestly can be a bit of a nightmare during rush hour – the building doesn’t look like much from the outside. But step inside and you’ve got these properly sized suites that actually feel like apartments.

The location is what really sells it though. You’re literally walking distance from Sandton City Mall, and I’m talking a genuine five-minute stroll, not that travel website nonsense where “walking distance” means a 20-minute hike. The Gautrain station is right there too, which makes getting to OR Tambo so much easier than dealing with Johannesburg traffic. I stayed here during a business trip last year and honestly, being able to grab dinner at the mall or hop on the train without calling an Uber every time was brilliant. The parking situation is actually decent – they have secure underground spots, though it fills up pretty quickly during the week since there are quite a few business travelers.

What I really appreciated was how quiet the rooms are once you close the windows. Grayston can get pretty busy, especially with all the construction happening in Sandton these days, but the soundproofing is surprisingly good. The kitchenettes are properly equipped too – not just a mini-fridge and kettle situation. I actually cooked a few meals, which saved me a fortune since eating out in Sandton every night adds up fast. The housekeeping staff were lovely, very friendly, and they didn’t mind that I had papers spread everywhere for meetings. Small thing, but the Wi-Fi actually works throughout the building, even in the lifts, which you can’t take for granted in South Africa. The only thing that bugged me slightly was the shower pressure – it’s fine, just not amazing – and sometimes the air conditioning takes a while to kick in properly. But honestly, for the price point and the location, you’re getting solid value. It’s not fancy, but it’s comfortable and practical, especially if you’re in Sandton for business or shopping and want something that feels more homey than your typical hotel room.
