I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Fauchil Boutique Hotel on Milner Avenue, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The street itself is pretty quiet, tucked away in what feels like a residential pocket of Johannesburg, but once you step inside, you realize that’s exactly the point. This five-star boutique spot is all about creating this intimate, almost homey atmosphere that’s worlds away from the typical corporate hotel experience you get in most of Joburg’s business districts.

What really struck me was how thoughtfully everything’s been put together here. The rooms aren’t massive – I mean, this is boutique after all – but they’ve managed to pack in these lovely touches that make you feel like you’re staying in someone’s incredibly well-appointed guest house rather than a hotel. The bathrooms are particularly nice, actually, with these rainfall showers that have proper water pressure (which, you know, isn’t always a given). I stayed on the upper floor and could hear some street noise in the early morning, but honestly, it was more charming than disruptive – just the sounds of the neighborhood waking up. The staff genuinely seems to know what they’re doing too, which makes a difference when you’re trying to navigate getting around the city or figuring out dinner plans.

Location-wise, you’re not right in the thick of Sandton or anything, but that’s sort of the beauty of it. You get this peaceful base to come back to, and you’re still close enough to the main areas when you need to be. I found myself walking around the neighborhood quite a bit – there are some decent local spots nearby that you probably wouldn’t discover if you were staying in one of those big chain places in the CBD. The hotel arranges transfers easily enough, and parking was never an issue when I had a rental car. Look, the 7.8 rating probably reflects that it’s not going to blow your mind with over-the-top luxury, but what it does, it does really well. It’s the kind of place where you actually want to hang out in the common areas, maybe have a drink before heading out for the evening, and where the whole experience feels more personal than transactional. If you’re looking for something with character in Joburg rather than just a place to crash, this one’s worth considering.

  Nice rooms, late checkout without having to pay. Nice and helpful staff.

  I am Sophia the cousin of the guests who stayed at your hotel. B assisted me with the booking and along the way with various others queries. She was exceptionally helpful and friendly and even went as far as to stay longer even though her shift had ended so that she can assist me with an issue I had and to assure that my family arrives well at your hotel. I have only the best things to say about her. My cousin was very happy with the service he received by everyone. They were very friendly and assisted him with all his needs.

  It looked good aesthetically, had most of the things a person may need such as dental products and a hairdryer. The staff was kind, the rooms were clean and the place is refreshing.

  The property is great. The staff was excellent, especially Wole.
  
  What could be improved: The towels in our room are very old and scratchy. There was only 1 pair of sleepers and 1 gown whereas the booking was for 2 people. There was only 1 bottle of still water. The wooden ironing board simple has to go as it was falling apart and iron itself is old style for the property.
