I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Firenza 24 on Pam Road, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like just another business hotel in Sandton. But you know what? Sometimes the unassuming places are the ones that surprise you the most, and this four-star gem absolutely delivered.

The thing about staying in Sandton is that you’re right in the heart of South Africa’s financial district, which means you’re surrounded by those gleaming office towers and shopping centers, but Firenza 24 actually manages to feel like a peaceful retreat despite being smack in the middle of all that energy. The staff – and I mean this genuinely – seem to actually care about getting the details right. My check-in was smooth (no standing around waiting while they fumbled with the system), and the woman at reception knew exactly which restaurants nearby were worth walking to for dinner. That’s the kind of local insight you don’t get at the big chain places.

The rooms themselves have this clean, modern vibe without feeling sterile – there’s actually some personality in the design choices. I stayed on the third floor and honestly barely heard any street noise, which in Johannesburg can be hit or miss depending on where you end up. The bed was properly comfortable (not too soft, not like sleeping on concrete), and they’ve got those blackout curtains that actually work if you’re dealing with jet lag. What I really appreciated was the attention to practical stuff – plenty of outlets near the desk, decent water pressure in the shower, and WiFi that didn’t cut out every twenty minutes. You’d be surprised how many places mess up these basics.

Here’s what really won me over though: the breakfast setup is small but thoughtful, with fresh fruit that’s actually fresh and coffee that doesn’t taste like it’s been sitting around since yesterday. Plus, if you need to grab a quick bite or forgot to pack something essential, the Sandton City shopping center is literally a five-minute walk away. I mean, you’ve got everything from Pick n Pay for snacks to proper restaurants if you want to venture beyond hotel dining. And getting to OR Tambo from here? Honestly couldn’t be easier – the Gautrain station is close enough that you don’t need to stress about airport transfers.

The whole experience felt refreshingly unpretentious. This isn’t trying to be some flashy resort or ultra-luxury experience, but it’s doing the fundamentals really, really well. After a few nights there, I realized that’s exactly what I wanted – a place where I could actually relax and recharge without any drama or hassles. Sometimes that’s worth way more than marble bathrooms and over-the-top amenities that you’ll never actually use.
