The Highland Road location is actually pretty brilliant if you know Johannesburg at all. You’re tucked away from the main tourist chaos but still close enough to everything that matters. I found myself walking to some fantastic local spots that most visitors never discover – there’s this incredible coffee roastery just a few blocks down that the staff tipped me off about, and honestly, it became my morning ritual. The neighborhood has this residential feel that’s rare to find in a hotel setting, which means you’re not dealing with the usual tourist trap restaurants and overpriced everything. Parking was straightforward too, which anyone who’s driven in Joburg will appreciate.

What really sets this villa apart – and I’ve stayed in quite a few places around the city – is how they’ve managed to blend that historical character with genuinely comfortable modern amenities. The rooms feel spacious and thoughtfully designed, not just decorated. I’m talking about things like actually good water pressure, blackout curtains that work properly, and air conditioning that doesn’t sound like a freight train. The common areas invite you to actually hang out rather than just pass through, with these amazing original light fixtures and carefully chosen period furniture that you can tell are the real deal, not reproductions. The staff seemed to genuinely know their stuff about both the property’s history and the local area – they’d casually drop suggestions about galleries or restaurants that ended up being absolute gems. I stayed during what I later learned was a busy season, but the place never felt crowded or hectic. There’s something about the layout and the way they’ve preserved the original architecture that creates these quiet corners and intimate spaces throughout the property. It’s the kind of place where you find yourself extending your stay if you can swing it.

  Fish bird is a beautiful 100 year old house, which has been beautifully restored. It is incredibly clean and very comfortable. The breakfast is great as well!

  A great charming converted house with lovely garden overlooking Johannesburg and when the weather is warm enough, the pool is an added bonus! Fantastic communal fully equipped kitchen. Great service by Percy, the Mgr!

  1923 Home so beautifully restored: incredible view, 15m pool and beautiful rooms. My daughter and I felt very safe in the heart of Johannesburg, Kensington. Home secured via an alarm at night—safe parking in the property.
