Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff Overview

I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from a five-star property perched on the edge of what locals call the northern suburbs. But the moment you step out of your car (and yes, the valet parking is seamless), you realize this place has something pretty special going on. The hotel sits on this incredible cliff overlooking Johannesburg, and I mean the views are absolutely stunning – you can see the entire city sprawling out below you, especially beautiful at sunset when the light hits all those Joburg high-rises just right.

What really got me about this place was how it manages to feel both grand and intimate at the same time. The lobby has this colonial elegance thing going on, but it’s not stuffy or over-the-top – more like staying at a sophisticated friend’s house if that friend happened to have impeccable taste and unlimited resources. The staff actually remembers your name after the first day, which honestly surprised me given how busy they seem to be. And you know what? The location on Jan Smuts Avenue is actually perfect – you’re close enough to Sandton City for serious shopping (about a 10-minute drive), but far enough away that you don’t get caught up in all that corporate hustle and bustle. I loved that you could walk down to the Zoo Lake area for morning jogs, and Rosebank is right there if you want to explore some local markets or grab dinner somewhere more casual.

The rooms themselves are exactly what you’d hope for – spacious, with those floor-to-ceiling windows that make the most of the cliff-side setting. I spent way too much time just sitting by the window with my morning coffee, watching the city wake up. The spa is genuinely world-class (I’m usually skeptical about hotel spas, but this one converted me), and the pool area feels like a private oasis even when it’s busy. What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed to create this bubble of luxury without completely losing touch with Johannesburg’s character – the art throughout the hotel showcases local talent, and the restaurant menus incorporate South African flavors in ways that feel authentic rather than forced. Sure, it’s pricey – this isn’t a budget stay by any stretch – but for a special occasion or if you’re doing business in the area and want to treat yourself, it’s absolutely worth it. Plus, with a 9.2 rating from guests, I’m clearly not the only one who thinks so.
