Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to Gallo Manor Executive Bed & Breakfast on Canterbury Crescent – the name made it sound a bit corporate, you know? But this five-star place completely surprised me in the best way possible. It’s tucked into this quiet residential street in the Gallo Manor area, which is actually perfect because you get that peaceful suburban vibe without being miles from everything. The house itself has this lovely colonial feel with beautiful gardens that someone clearly puts a lot of love into – I mean, the bougainvillea alone is worth photographing.

What really struck me was how personal everything felt despite the “executive” branding. The owners (I think they live on the property) genuinely seem to care about getting the details right. My room had this gorgeous four-poster bed with crisp white linens, and there’s something about the way the morning light filters through those plantation shutters that just makes you want to linger over coffee. Speaking of coffee – they serve a proper South African breakfast that’ll keep you going all day, and the coffee is strong enough to wake the dead, which I definitely needed after those long Johannesburg nights. The dining room opens onto a covered veranda where you can actually hear birds singing, which feels almost miraculous when you remember you’re still in Joburg.

Location-wise, you’re really well positioned here – it’s about a 15-minute drive to Sandton if you need to be in the business district, and getting to OR Tambo isn’t the nightmare it could be from other parts of the city. I actually walked to a decent restaurant one evening (rare for Johannesburg, let’s be honest), and there’s a shopping center nearby for basics. The security is excellent without feeling fortress-like, which matters in this city. Parking is easy and covered, which your rental car will thank you for. The Wi-Fi actually works properly throughout the property – I know that sounds basic, but you’d be surprised how many places get this wrong. My only tiny complaint would be that the air conditioning in my room was a bit noisy, but honestly, it kept things perfectly cool during those sweltering summer days. The 8.3 rating this place gets feels about right – it’s not trying to be a flashy hotel, but it does what it promises really, really well.

  I loved the tranquility of the garden and nature and the setup where we had alot of privacy.

  The quietness is so calming, the sound of the stream near the fishpond is perfect Spacious air-conditioned rooms and equally spacious bathrooms. Bed was extremely comfortable too.

  What could be improved: There was a strange musky smell in Capri when we walked in.
  Breakfast is honestly not interesting, and maybe you need to change your pork sausage supplier or brand, it always tastes dry and kind of off. And breakfast takes forever to arrive.
  Maybe also keep the juice on ice especially in this heat
