You know what struck me first about Grace Guest House? The name actually fits – there’s something genuinely graceful about this place that you don’t always find in four-star guesthouses. I mean, when you pull up to 142 Curzon Road in Bryanston, you’re not expecting much from the street view, but step inside and it’s like someone’s elegant aunt decided to open her home to travelers. The kind of aunt who has really good taste and knows how to make people feel comfortable without being fussy about it.

Bryanston itself is one of those Johannesburg suburbs that locals love but tourists often miss – it’s got this quiet residential vibe but you’re actually close to everything that matters. The Sandton business district is practically next door, which explains why I kept running into business travelers in the breakfast room, but it never felt corporate or sterile. What I really appreciated was how walkable the immediate area is, especially along Curzon Road where you’ve got decent coffee shops and that little cluster of restaurants that the staff will actually give you honest opinions about (not just the usual tourist recommendations). The parking situation is refreshingly stress-free too – you know how that can make or break a stay in Joburg.

Honestly, the 9.5 rating makes sense once you’ve been there a few days. It’s not because everything is perfect – the WiFi can be a bit spotty in some rooms, and the hot water takes a minute to kick in – but because the things that matter most are done really well. The rooms have this lived-in elegance, like staying in a friend’s guest room if your friend happened to have excellent taste in linens and knew how to arrange flowers. The breakfast spread is properly good, not just pastries and instant coffee, and the staff seem to actually remember your preferences after a day or two. I found myself lingering in the common areas more than usual, partly because they’re comfortable but mostly because there’s always someone interesting to chat with – other guests, staff members who know the neighborhood inside out, that sort of thing. If you’re the type who prefers big chain hotels with identical rooms and 24-hour room service, this probably isn’t your place. But if you want somewhere that feels authentic and unforced, where you might actually learn something about the city from the people around you, Grace Guest House gets it right.

  Gardens were beautiful. Breakfast was excellent. Fabulous little set up in the Cottage with a lovely kitchen with all the things one looks for – coffee plunger/milk in the fridge for u / dishes etc. there was a safe too for valuables – very handy. Great private patio. Felt safe and self contained. Friendly helpful staff – both Lizette and Lettie.
