Grand View B&B Overview
You know what struck me first about Grand View B&B? It’s tucked away on Putney Road in Auckland Park, which honestly feels like discovering one of Johannesburg’s best-kept secrets. I mean, most people rush straight to Sandton or the trendy spots in Maboneng, but this little corner of the city has this wonderfully lived-in character that grows on you.
The place itself is this charming three-star setup that doesn’t try to be something it’s not – and that’s exactly why it works. The owners have this knack for making you feel like you’re staying with friends rather than checking into another impersonal hotel. I actually ended up chatting with them over coffee in the morning, getting insider tips about which local cafés serve the best boerewors and where to find decent parking near the Wits Art Museum (spoiler: it’s trickier than you’d think). The rooms are comfortable in that genuine way – not Instagram-perfect, but everything works and you sleep well. Mine had this lovely view of the jacaranda-lined street that’s absolutely magical when the trees are in bloom, though I visited during winter so I had to use my imagination a bit.
What really sold me on the place was the breakfast situation. They do this proper South African spread – none of that sad continental buffet nonsense – with fresh rusks, good coffee, and eggs done exactly how you ask. The dining area overlooks their small garden where you can actually hear birds chirping, which sounds ridiculous but felt like such a luxury in a city that size. Auckland Park itself is sort of this academic bubble around the University of the Witwatersrand, so there’s this nice mix of students, professors, and longtime residents that gives the area genuine personality. You’re close enough to catch a taxi into the city center without the hassle, but far enough out that you’re not dealing with the constant hum of traffic. I walked to the Origins Centre one afternoon – maybe fifteen minutes on foot – and discovered this whole strip of bookshops and coffee places I never would have found otherwise. The owners were spot-on with their recommendations too; they sent me to this Ethiopian restaurant nearby that ended up being one of my best meals in the city. Look, it’s not going to win any design awards, and the Wi-Fi can be a bit temperamental in the evenings, but there’s something refreshingly honest about staying somewhere that feels like part of the neighborhood rather than dropped in from some corporate hotel template.
